I'm thinking he wants either 4:3 aspect ratio correct on a 16:9 screen (black bars), or the black bars some of you crazies prefer (scanlines).

no I mean, on the VP50 you can add black bars on the head ans foot of the screen. Then, when you have subtitles in japanese out of the screen, you hide them with the black bar.

in the VP50 menu, it is the "border" option. Can't find it in the Edge...

Can't say I understand why anyone would want to obscure subtitles but, I didn't see anything about it in the user manual.

Because when you obscure the subtitles, you can concentrate on the movie better.

Do you know any other machine who can do this job ?

Does the DVDO Edge not have a 21:9 aspect ratio option and custom zoom controls?

It does (going off the manual again, I don't have an Edge). The downside to zooming is that you couldn't maintain AR in some cases like you could with a border.

At Mimy: If you have a VP50 why not use that?

I have no more VP50...
And in fact, now I would like to find an adapter who can do this trick, but with RCA in and out. VP50 doesnt only HDMI out.
Do you know something like this ?

:D

But, I would like to try that :
LD player -> Black border machine -> LD-G decoder -> DVDO Edge
Like this, I can try to erase the Japanese subtitles and replace it by the English subtitles !

yeah, I remember the double subs from back in the days.

But masking in SD interlaced mode ? Don't know about that. Maybe some early video graphics generators. You know, those machines used with linear editing back in the days ?

If it bothers you that much you might as well just get a capture card and digitize your LD collection. Then you can crop out the borders in editing and get rid of the disc flipping pauses too. I'm planning to do this myself with my LDs.

I even found this neat Resolution / Aspect Ratio Cheat sheet.

hello mimy!

the black bars you are referring to are called "borders"

unfortunately it appears that the Edge and Edge Green only give you control of the border brightness and not the actual size of the borders themselves. however, the older DVDO processors such as the HD and HD+ do have border controls. and should give you the exact same abilities as your VP50 had (as far as border controls)

you can usually find them for a pretty good price if you look (I paid $79 for my HD and $99 for my HD+)

couldn't he make his own borders/black squares (and theoretically add subtitles) with one of those BlackMagic Design Multibridge Pro 2 things that you did a scanline test with?

the HD only has VGA/RGB and component for analog outputs. it has DVI for digital output (you can turn that into HDMI with a DVI to HDMI cable), do you need RCA composite-out for hooking up to the LD-G decoder? (for your subtitles project?)

refresh my memory, isn't the main purpose of the LD-G decoder to change the screen placement of subtitles while watching a laserdisc movie? does it have any other features?

another problem is if you're processing the composite output of your LD player and then outputting that into the LD-G decoder will it still be able to see the subtitle data?
