PCM 9L3 - Discoloration at top right hand corner

Post by redcage »

Hi all,

Had just obtained a PVM-9L3 which seems to be in a good condition (Made on 2005 Too!) until I noticed that there is some discoloration in the top right hand corner.

These seems to be the usual sign of something magnetic nearby perhaps? I have removed the nearby speakers but that didn't do anything.

The degauss function doesn't seemed to be working like the other monitors usually do (the shaking and etc) as well.

The monitor however seems alright once I remove the metal shielding !

Any ideas what I can do ? I read on some threads about putting magnets at the back of the tube but I don't think this seems to be the case since it works fine without the metal shielding..

Please help !

Sounds like the metal shielding has become magnetised? When you turn the monitor on (or use the degauss function), does the monitor make some noise at least? The degaussing on my L2 isn't quite as violent as it is on PC CRT monitors.

You can try a standalone deguassing coil, or try taping some magnets to the glass tube inside (which is how I solved a similar issue on my 14L2).

Yes there is some noise when I press the degauss button, it's nowhere as violent as a PC CRT

I did read about taping some magnets in the tube but I was hoping that I won't have to go that route haha

Maybe I should see how I can demagnetize the metal shielding as well.

Is it normal to have magnets stuck taped to the glass tube ? I did notice there were a couple stuck to the side when I opened the casing.

Thank you !

Yes, part of the factory calibration involves sticking some magnets and convergence strips to the tube.

The issue has been successfully taken care off!

By taping a small bit of those strip magnet onto the back of the glass tube the discoloration at the corner had mostly gone away however there seemed to be a very slight discoloration at the center top area now.

Rather than taping additional strip magnets at the back, I taped a longer strip of magnet on the top of the PVM Bezel/Frame and that solved the discoloration at the top!

Thanks for the suggestions!

It's definitely a last resort but it can breathe new life into an old CRT :)
