PSP version of Noiz2sa and rRootage

Noiz2sa has been released for PSP

This is an initial beta of the port, so there's a few problems like the aspect ratio being incorrect and a rough framerate, but the acclaimed gameplay is intact.

Good stuff. It also supports custom soundtracks in Amiga MOD formats.

I cannot tell you how happy I was to see this ported. Saw it posted on pspupdates the other day and could hardly contain myself. Hopefully an cleaned up/optimized final version will be released, followed by some more ABA game ports!

Ports of the other games are unlikely. Noiz2sa is written in C++ for some reason, but most of Kenta Cho's other games are written in D - the only working compiler only outputs x86 binaries, and the attempt at an open source compiler isn't ready for use yet. There's a lot of room for optimization on this noiz2sa port, though, I'm fairly sure the psp should be able to run it at full framerate.

Oh my freakin god - I love thsi game... I'm gonna have to run the downgrade from 2.0 > 1.5 to have this on my PSP. Wonderful news!

Oh sweet, nice find TF! Just the other day I was hoping someone would port a homebrew shmup to the PSP.The short time I played Noiz2sa last year I loved it, the PSP is perfect to get into this gem some more. :D

Now what we need is some PSP ChoRenSha or maybe even some Kamui goodness.

edit: Just installed it, absolutely awesome, looks great on the PSP's screen. I need to read up on the scoring sometime soon. I also notice in the zip file some of the files are labeled "Progear" and "Ketsui," the man has good taste.

Yeah I noticed that too. I was glad to see Psyvariar in there. (I think I have a mild fetish for Skonec bullet patterns :))

Never been sure though if the Kenta Cho patterns are essentially "inspired" by these specific patterns in commercial games, or if they in fact directly replicate them...

yea, im not big on the aspect ratio changes either it really feels squashed..
plus your hitbox is so small to begin with its REALLY hard to die

Progear and Ketsui have EVIL variable speed / direction bullets... at least Skonec bullets don't suddenly change direction on you....

FWIW, rRootage is also written in C++. I can't imagine playing either of those games very effectively on a small screen though. If I had a PSP, I sure would try.

Finally had time to install this last night.

Just wanted to say thanks to the developers. This is a great game and - despite only being a beta at this point - it's clearly going to shape up to be a great conversion and a really nice shmup to have on your PSP.

Worth mentioning, that V0.6 saw release this week, with some exclusive new features to this PSP port...
- Rendering optimizations: frame rate is boosted from 20fps (v.05) to 30fps normal / 60fps wireframe mode.

- Wireframe mode can be enabled by setting "RENDER_BG 0" in ./images/colors.txt file. If set, background is not filled with color, which, in my opinion, creates a nice effect & saves lot's of CPU juice for boosting the frame rate.

- Color customization: all game color can be re-assigned by changing ./images/colors.txt file. Colors are in 8 bit RGB format (where R,G,B range from 0 to 255. Note that actual display color components are in 5 bit format, meaning that colors (255,255,255) & (254,254,254) are going to look the same on the screen.

- New color theme. Of course, if you don't like it, create your own or use the classic one by swapping files in images directory withthe ones from images_classic.

- New soundtrack added. NOTE: you can still use any mod/s3m/xm/it files as your game music. Make sure that they have <8 channels, named properly & put in the sounds directory.

- Side panels can be changed by editing corresponding images in ./images directory. Make sure you keep the size the same & save images as 8 bit BMPs.

- Numerous bug fixes: it should not hang on exit anymore, play sound on extra life bonus and so on.
If you use the "images_classic" graphics set with the "RENDER_BG 0" option added to it, it gives you a near 60fps recreation of the PC original.

Just some stuff that may be of interest... firstly, it's not mentioned anywhere, but this port of noiz2sa clocks the PSP cpu up to maximum (333mhz). This is hell on your battery life, as some of you will have found out with emulators. Also, at ps2dev.org (developers of the open toolchain)there's a new port coming along (get it from svn if you want to try, but it's not worth it just yet) without the squished graphics, better performance, no overclock, and the original vorbis music.

V0.7 is out...

That's right folks... Tate.
- Tate mode: lots of people requested this feature... More room for action & better scaling. looks and controls much like "Star Soldier". Note: I decided to create a separate tate-mode version, since it's using different sized graphics. If you like the horizontal mode, stick to v0.6 for now.

- Nicer graphics: customizable backgrounds, wireframe mode, semi-transparent shapes.

- New blue color scheme. If you like the original graphics, ovewrite the files in images directory with the stuff from images_classic. You can still create your own color schemes/backgrounds/hud. Just edit the files in images directory.

- 50% new soundtracks.

- Menu graphics logic adjustments.

- Numerous optimizations and bug fixes.
This notorious site seems to be the only place hosting the download right at the moment, I'm sure it'll be everywhere soon though.

No, but it works flawlessly on a PSP Slim using the "Time machine" which allows you to run a modified 1.5 firmware.
I suggest you google it, it works wonders! :D

I was playing this for a couple hours yesterday and now I'm fiddling with the graphics/colors just for the hell of it.

I was looking around the internet to see if anyone had themes for download, but couldn't find anything. Anyone customized theirs by chance? If so, please share some screens. :)

Noiz2sa works just fine on a original PSP with fw1.50 -- still haven't taken the bait to upgrade it yet...still has the same pre-installed 1.50 firmware when I first got it brand new back in May of 2005. Still guzzles up PSP batteries like no tomorrow when playing homebrew + arcade emulation such as MVS, CPS1, CPS2 due to overclocked CPU running at 333mHz...

SCEA quietly recalled all of the unsold Sony Stamina PSP-280u 2200 mAh battery packs that had the usual plastic blister packaging and replaced them with eco-friendly cardboard packaging and two different PSP battery covers for the same MSRP of $39.99 USD for use with the PSPslim model variant right now in stores nationwide. Most stores in the USA don't even sell the original PSP Stamina battery pack that came in the blister packaging anymore for the original PSP...

Will need to pick up a PSPslim variant to play the latest PSP UMDs... ^_~

There really isn't that much homebrew game development for PSP's with fw1.50 but it does come out every once in a great while...

Good news for PSP Slim owners... FYI a user by the name of doobz on DCEmu forums has this week posted PSP versions of both Noiz2sa and rRootage, that natively support 3.xx custom firmware PSP Slims.

Thanks for posting the aforementioned, TF - as a recent PSP Slim buyer, last night I made my first attempt to put some DLed stuff on the memory stick. However, I had some trouble, having never done this before...the weird thing is, at the same time I DLed the Echochrome demo, and managed to get it to work. From what I managed to gather, what I needed to do was 1) Create a "GAME" subfolder, and 2) Put a folder for the game in that, with only the .pbp (I think) file in it. For EC it worked, but when I tried to start up Noiz and RR with the same setup (both showed up on the menu) I was told the former was corrupted and, while I managed to get to the PSP logo screen with the latter, it still said it "couldn't be started" or some such thing.

Anyone willing to tell me what I'm doing wrong?

BulletMagnet you need to have custom firmware on your psp in order to be able to play any homebrew games, emulators or umd game backups. The psp is pretty bunk until you get custom firmware on it.

Or you could get an original "fat" PSP with fw 1.00/1.50 and play the homebrew games, emulators and umd game backups...there is still is a handful of development for it, although not as much as for the PSP Slim nowdays.

After taking a quick look around it appears that to install anything like this onto a slim model requires that I have a fat model handy...I never intended to do anything this complicated with the PSP, I just figured that "legit" free stuff like homebrew games wouldn't be an issue to just DL and play. Guess I was wrong.

Anyways, thanks for the help - guess I'll just have to stick with playing this stuff on the PC.

Nope, you don't need to have a fat model. To mod a brand new PSP Slim with the custom firmware you just have to buy a Pandora modding battery (the reliable online company Datel sells them rebranded as "Tool batteries" relatively cheaply), then download some free custom firmware installing software from the internet, then perform a special WinXP format of a PSP Memory Stick, put your downloaded software on the memory stick, insert the Tool battery and Memory Stick into your PSP Slim at the same time, and then your PSP will automatically be upgraded to custom firmware. (That's a summary, there are tutorials out there with more specific implementation details.)

It's definitely worth doing, as it gives you better framerate in commercial games (333Mhz CPU unlocked), better screen quality (4th brightness setting unlocked), and of course virtually unlimited emulated shmups and homebrew...

I've been wondering if someone was going to port these to 3.XX kernel soon!

All thats left are Cave Story(i think) and Mega Asshole Portable and I can liberate myself from the 1.5 kernel addon. Really been meaning to import DJ max portable2, the damn 1.5kernel deletes the korean font though.

I also have a fat psp with 3.90-3 M33 and the 1.5 kernal addon and I'm able to play DJ Max Portable 2 with out any problems. You might also want to check out PSP Revolution, it's DDR (stepmania) on your psp.
