So I just learned that you can overclock the CPU on a Nintendo 64 for higher/more stable frame rates and less lag. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to this mod? Apparently it only works on newer NUS-CPU-05 to 08 CPUs, with the 08 board being the most stable one.
Does anyone know of any modding services that will overclock a Nintendo 64?
Here is a comparison video of an N64 running at the standard 93.75MHz and an overclocked N64 running at 125 MHz:

Notice how much faster the overclocked N64 is. It almost looks too fast.

I don't know about that particular mod, but the overclock mod normally adds support for running at a 1.0/1.5/2.0/3.0 clock speed multiplier.
It only helps to a limited degree, because it's only overclocking the CPU, and the primary cause of slowdown on the N64 was the fill rate on the GPU (the RCP, Reality Coprocessor).

Yeah, I also heard the overclock mod requires a cooling fan to prevent the system from overheating. And supposedly it only helps in a few instances like 4 player mode (Smash, Mario Kart 64, etc.) and Perfect Dark/Goldeneye 007. Apparently some games will run too fast with the mod. And requires very precise soldering.Guspaz wrote:I don't know about that particular mod, but the overclock mod normally adds support for running at a 1.0/1.5/2.0/3.0 clock speed multiplier.
