Looking to build shielded RGB -> BNC cables

Post by ltwm3 »

Hey gang, I've been doing some reading over the past month or so, and I finally picked up a Sony BVM-D20F1U with 45k hours on it, as well as an Extron Crosspoint RGB/BNC matrix switch. I've been looking at RGB cable wiring schematics on Tim Worthington's site at http://members.optusnet.com.au/eviltim/ ... escart.htm, and I have a few questions.

1. Are Tim's schematics the be-all-end-all to RGB cable schematics or are there better designs floating around?
2. I'd like to make my RGB BNC cables between 6-8ft long, with shielding, what would be the optimal shielded wire stock to use? (shielded coax or shielded multi core?)
3. Connectors - gold plated doesn't mean a thing if the actual material that the connector is made from is sub-par, so what are the preferred sources for quality BNC and RCA connectors?
4. Male console ends - Nintendo A/V and Genesis/Saturn 8 pin DIN source? I imagine the connectors floating around on ebay are junk, am I wrong?
5. Caps - Panasonic is the go-to for caps, yes?
6. As far as the BVM-D is concerned, if I understand correctly, the RGB ports are internally terminated at 75ohms if nothing is connected to the Output side, right? What does this mean for cable design if anything?
7. I have a Genesis model 1, since Mono Audio is only available at the DIN plug in the back, I see people recommend grabbing stereo from the headphone jack up front, is there a better solution?

Super excited to get my consoles modded and wires build. I'm envious of a lot of the setups you guys have!

Thanks in advance for any and all assistance!

You should talk to Ste from HD Retrovision. They've done exhaustive research and testing for all this stuff (albeit using RCA instead of BNC), and could probably offer you some pretty informed advice. IIRC they ended up having to get custom cable stock manufactured to meet their standards (in terms of custom shielding specs). IIRC they had some plans to use their custom cable stock to produce RCA extension cables just because it was much better cable than anything else you'd find, but this implies that they could potentially supply you with some of the raw stock if you needed. They also sell the Nintendo AV connectors on their site, the same ones they used in their component cables. Presumably they tested a lot of them.

Ultimately, I'm not sure that you'd notice any real difference between your planned DIY approach and just buying the shielded stuff from Retro Console Accessories. Part of why HDR wanted to use such high-end cabling was likely so that they could rule out the cabling if any issues should occur.

Retro Console Accessories is actually selling these now: http://www.ebay.com/itm/201611745371

If your Crosspoint is the larger one, you'll need to make sure the BNC length of the cable is about 20 inches long though, otherwise the RGB lines won't be able to reach.

Saturn is 10 pin, not 8.

And Tim's schematic of the Saturn only shows the NTSC variant. The PAL version drops 5v and provides c sync instead.
