Sony D20F1E problem with 480p (periodic video distortion)

Post by WMJ »

Hello all,

Great Forum! Learned of lot of useful things reading some of the topics here lately. As a shmup fan myself too it's about time I join the forum.

I have recently picked up a Sony D20F1E monitor (was looking for one of these for half a year!). The monitor has only 4350 hours on it.

There is a problem however, with displaying 480p content. There is this constant flickering of some lines every few seconds or so that also lightly distorts the image. It seems most noticable on still screens such as menus and so on. I have tested it with PS2 RGsB and component as well as Wii component using both the analog and BKM-21D input boards. Notably, when I use RGB over Scart with the PS2 and play a 240p PS1 game the issue is not present. I have the 75 ohm terminators on all the outpus.

I have made a short video to show the problem since it's a bit hard to describe. The video is not good quality but you can see the problem clearly especially on the edge of the screen.

I really hope someone hear can help me or has an idea of what's going on because I'm at a loss (I really hope I didn' t end up with a faulty monitor after all).

Edit: After going through the service manual again there seems to be a cure. By going in the the extended setup menu and using the option "Adjust Internal Signal" the problems with the lines flickering goes away. It will adjust the setup levels and 100 IRE levels and say Procedure Completed. At this point the picture is stable. Somehow I am unable to save this setting. If I click on menu to return to the previous menu the problems returns. Anyone know how to save this adjustment after the procedure is completed? At least I'm reasonably sure the monitor isn't faulty.

I have taken the time to make a much better video explaining the problem. I'm still kind of lost on how to fix this so if anyone has some ideas please let me know.

I actually didn't think the 20F1E supported 480p... makes me wonder if my 20G1E supports 480p then... hmm...

The 20F1E doesn't. In this case it's a D series monitor (D)20F1E and the D series (and A series) do support up to 1080i. I'm really hoping this problem can be fixed somehow because it looks pretty amazing otherwise in 480p and it's lag free.

1 year later and the problem is finally fixed!

I am posting this here in case anyone runs into a similar problem although it does seem to be a very rare case.

It's a pretty long story and the monitor has even been at a local repair place specialized in professional video equipment for 3 months before they gave it back to me as they couldn't figure out wat was wrong with it.

A few months ago I contacted savon_pat from whom I bought a repair kit for the D20 monitor on ebay with a whole set of new capacitors. Even after full installation, the kit didn't fix the problem. Savon_pat was very helpful on the phone and was kind enough to offer to look at the deflection module as that was the most likely culprit. I shipped it out to him and it turns out that an IC on the deflection module had gone bad that regulated the convergence settings. I could change the convergence in the menu and it would save the value but it wouldn't update. Every few seconds it would try to update which were the distortions I observed in the video. The distortions were actually visible on all input resolutions but just happened to be more noticeable on 480p sources. So, it wasn't a 480p specific problem after all. In fact, it was even noticeable to a small degree on just the menu text without any external source connected.

In the end I could buy a new D20 deflection module and that finally fixed this whole problem.

I am now looking for a BKM-14L probe as the monitor needs to calibrated again with the new deflection module. At the moment the colors are pretty off in the corners. This is only a calibration issue so with this probe the monitor should finally be in great shape again. If anyone happens to have one of these probes that I could use maybe just once to calibrate it I would be super grateful.
