Genesis, Csync and jailbars

Post by ZellSF »

Quick question, but I am a bit worried. One of the jailbar fixes is to lift pin 6 from the encoder (?). I have done that and now I get no sync.

From what I've read lifting pin6 disables composite video and since my RGB cable uses composite video sync could that be why sync is now broken and all I need is a csync cable?

Can I somehow modify my composite video sync cable to a csync cable?

Yes, you can resolder so that the composite cable goes to Csync. Just open up the DIN connector and change it from pin 3 to 7 according to this schedule.

It's a model 1. Already tried resoldering. Didn't work by itself.

At the very least you need 220uF capacitor + 75ohm resistor on the csync output of the MD1.

Yeah that's what I read (a lot of people didn't mention it though), but no mention of what is on composite video cable already. Is neither of those parts on the cable already?

Could I have broken the Genesis by screwing that up?

no, a cable configured for composite video as sync won't have these. To make CSYNC work you need the cap. The resistor is optional but helps. And no, you can't damage anything, you just won't get a picture without it.

im fortunate enough to not need the jailbar fix as I play my Mega Drive on my BVM, which you cant see them on. When live streaming, the video compression hides the jailbars too.
