Tatsujin - PC Engine - Is it worth the price of admission?
Hi guys,
I know a lot of folk rate the arcade and Genesis versions of Tatsujin, but little is ever mentioned of the PCE version. I hear that it is rarer with increased difficulty. Other than this, I know very little.
If there are any owners of the PCE version out there, could you provide some feedback for me, and a recommendation as to whether its worth buying (currently retails at £50 in the UK).
Any help would be appreciated.

i haven't spent a whole lot of time with it but if you've played the other two, the pce version plays much closer to arcade. for example: the enemies actually shoot at you, something you can't say about the earlier parts of the genesis/md version.
edit: actually, after another look at the arcade rev, i daresay PCE is much more aggressive in difficulty.
also i realize i am not being that helpful after all.
sorry.
not worth another post, i concur with Neon \/

I wouldn't get the PC-Engine version unless you want it for some specific collection reason.
The colors and the bullets are closer to the arcade and it's fullscreen, but the sound is much worse than the Megadrive version, it's missing some frames of animation (when you shoot the enemies they just crash, whereas on MD they crash and burn) and the difficulty is just nuts. Considering neither of the two or anything near perfect ports and it's not such a terribly motivating game to begin with, I would get the MD version if only because it's considerably cheaper.

I disagree.
The PCE ver is fine in terms of difficulty and music in my opinion.
Perhaps my opinion should count on this game

It's simple to set the difficulty in PCE Tatsujin to "Easy" if you want.
Shame it's so expensive, it's been on my wanted list for a while.

No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Yes, I prefer the music of the PCE version over the MD ver. I've heard the arcade original, and I know the MD's FM is closer to the arcade's music; but I like the "punch" the PCE ver's music has.
Plus it has a nice debug mode.

Well, it certainly looks better then the Genesis port; it has much brighter colors.
But this game pretty close to, if not at, arcade-Gradius III difficulty; it's much more frustrating then fun, and the PC Engine port is no different in this regard; if anything, it's even harder then the Genesis ports.
Again, it's quite a shame that Tatsujin-Oh only got one home console port; on the FM Towns Marty, because, IMO, it's much more reasonable in terms of difficulty.
So, unless you're a huge fan of this game, I'd definately pass. I have a Core Grafx, and I have no plans to add this one to my HuCard library.

Truxton for the Genesis features a black border to the right side of the screen. Y'know, showing your remaining lives and bombs. Its kinda goofy if you ask me.
I prefer the PC-Engine version, as its full screen. The arcade is Tate, but I feel that the PC-Engine version just captures the overall "feel" of the game much better.
Its only expensive due to its rarity. I don't believe that there were many made.
I'd still like to pick it up, but untill then, I'll be ok with the Genny version.
Then again, I really don't play Truxton/Tatsujin much at all.

Hmmm... I really enjoy the genisis version, i prefer the music and the graphics over the PCE port. The genny also (from memory) has a nice flickery animation when fully powered up with the pink ship, rotating around the sidearms, that I don't remember on the PCE. Oh and (again from memory) the smouldering remains of ground tanky things seems to blend with the background better.
In terms of difficulty the MD version is no doubt much easier, in fact i can't discern any differance between easy, normal and hard (MD) other than the amount of credits you begin with
IMO the pace of the MD ver. eases you into the game better than the PCE.
There might be a nostalgic factor here tho as Truxton was the first game i got for my Megadrive!

Well boys, after the expense of Garegga, Raiden III, Daisen-pu and Gradius V, I've finally rustled up enough dosh for PCE Tatsujin. The GT is warmed up and raring to go - here's to holidays and tough challengesDEL wrote:The PC Engine version is the Nuts!

I'm guessing you are either playing on a US/EU Genesis/MD, or a JP MD switched to English? The differences are more noticable when played on a Genesis/MD set to Japanese. Those two brown mini boss things that appear early in stage 1 shoot multiple round bullets at you in hard mode when the Genesis is set to JP, not just lasers and that top shot thing. No matter which version you have, it plays as Truxton in EN mode and Tatsujin in JP mode. On a JP Megadrive or a switched MD/Genesis set to JP mode, bullets are faster and even normal mode seems to be harder than the EN switched version's hard.i can't discern any differance between easy, normal and hard (MD) other than the amount of credits you begin with
Edit: I found out that the PCE Tatsujin is not only harder than the MD version on hard by default, but has harder modes, including an "Expart" mode.

"Expart" eh? That just might be the engrish ever.BrianC wrote:Edit: I found out that the PCE Tatsujin is not only harder than the MD version on hard by default, but has harder modes, including an "Expart" mode.
I've not played the PCE version, and I've never played the PCB version, but the MD/Genesis version is difficult enough that I would probably weep like a baby if I had to 1CC either of the others. The MD version is plenty difficult for me.

It could be that the hardware was better (rgb/scart converted PCE), but the vibrancy, speed, sound and gameplay of Tatsujin seemed to be very well emulated........just my two penneth worth
