Post your MAME / emu setup here

Post by superhitachi4 »

(This is intended for those of you who aren't horribly offended by emulation. ;)) Just wondering what kind of setup you guys use for MAME, and other emulators. (system specs, MAME settings, controllers, etc.) Currently I'm running: XP1800 @ 1.9ghz, 300mhz FSB, 512mb DDR, Geforce 4 ti4800SE, monitor in TATE mode, SNES pad on printer port. Some of my MAME settings (advanced tab): directdraw on, triple buffering on, match game refresh rate on, switch resolutions to fit currently on, but I switch this off sometimes, switch color depths on, draw every frame on, stretch using hardware 4:3 on. Curious to hear what you guys currently use.

Intel Celeron 2.0 GHz, XP Professional SP2
430GB spread amongst four partitions
GeForceFX 5200 128MB AGP
630MB DDR RAM
PS2 DualShock/Namco Arcade Stick/Hori Tekken 5 Arcade Stick/beatmaniaIIDX controller.
Autoframeskipping on most games, except beatmania (turning frameskipping off helps fix the timing problem somewhat)

All this thread reminds me of is how I should start submitting to MARP again. :/

I have MAME installed on a Pentium III laptop, an Xbox, and a PSP. Accessories include a TATE-able LCD monitor and several arcade sticks.

I need one of these. Emulation is preferable to the real thing for some instances, after all...(replays, savestates).

I use the stock mame settings, only thing I change is that I use an arcade stick or saturn pad instead of the keyboard. Which probably isn't the best thing to do, is it...what's the best possible configuration for mame32 (if there is one)?

Hmm, wouldn't say there's a "best" config, as everyone's system / preferences are different, but I can say that the use of triple buffering helps quite a bit with the blurring in vertical shooters. ;) By all means, if your card / drivers support it, enable it and see what you think.

my school's computers. mame runs great, only thing wrong is a bit of slowdown in the Caves, not sure if this is just realism, though. probably is, because Varth runs just as i would expect the arcade to (rather slowly that is).
I have no sig whatsoever.

My old setup
Not exactly sure what's in there... a 850 MHz Athlon something-or-other, 256 MB RAM or thereabouts... Some kind of GeForce 2 video card (borrowed from a friend), PS1 mini arcade stick on a USB adaptor from Radio Shack, and a rotatable monitor!!

My new setup
Totally home-built. :]

edit: And big thanks to PPPP for helping me get a big part of that pic :)

I used to be big into emulation (and MAME in particular) years ago. I've been using MAME since version .11 or so, but I really haven't kept up. I'd like to think that I've graduated to the real thing, but I do still MAME stuff on occasion, now that I can legally play at least a few things. I don't think I've updated my version of MAME since playable SPI emulation got added, and my ROMs are probably a pig's breakfast by now. Anyway, when I do MAME stuff, I use:

Athlon64 3200+ (Sockst 939)
Abit AV8 motherboard
EVGA GeForce 6600GT AGP
1GB Corsair XMS memory
Antec Sonata case
Dell 2001FP (easily TATEable 20" LCD)
control with the keyboard

I've always been a PC hardware junkie, so I like to make sure I've got a decent system. I haven't really been keeping up with that much either lately, although my stuff should be fine for a while. When the price comes down I'll probably put a dual core proc in this thing.

1.3 gig processor
256 k of RAM
Cheap ass Compaq PC
CPS 2 games stutter unless run on Kawaks, same for Taito F3 and Neo Geo (Raine for Taito games, or Direct Draw off fixes it for MAME)

MAME count over 1,000.

NES count everything made I think, Genesis same, SNES about all, GB/GBC/SMS/Game Gear about all, TG-16 about all, a few burned CD's.

Amiga, a few games, Atari ST a few games, ColecoVision, a few games, Atari 2600 501 games, 5200/7800 a few games.

GBA only what I liked.
I emu strange systems I know for sure.

Hell emulation made me track down and buy a few classic titles. :D

You sir are God, that cab, how much did it set you back? Looks like it may have cost quite a mint. :o

I didn't really shop around for anything. When building, if I needed it, I went to the store (usually about 5 minutes before they closed) and bought it.

As a result, it cost me more than it should of but was a blast to build.

All was around $2035. There's a price breakdown here: http://www.verticaladdiction.net/cabinet1/page7.shtml

Nice Arcade. What front end is that?

You can build an arcade for much much less if you scavenge for parts. I spent about $800 on mine (which is still quite a bit!). I used an old Pentium 3 computer I had around. You can save more if you find a used TV and old gutted cabinet. I had a blast building mine too... I actually wish I spent more and put in a wells gardner arcade monitor...

If I had the cash and the know how, I'd do the same thing, but since I'm poor I can always dream and hope I hit the lottery. First thing I'd do is hire you to make me an exact cab.

That's pretty damned cool though, anytime you want to play a game, it's there, and it has to have that authentic arcade feel to it, even if it is MAME.

It's running AdvanceMenu with custom colors setup.

In my "favorites" list, most of the snaps are animated MNG files so there are video previews.

I know I could have built the computer for less, but I wanted a more powerful machine. And at the time, those were the prices for what I wanted. I also didn't want to gut an old arcade machine, I wanted to build from scratch.

I did scavenge the coin door and trackball from Ebay ;)
