What has become of Akihabara?

Post by gbaplayer »

Hello,

i wonder if retro game shops in Akihabara are still offering large amounts of games for sale?
I have been to Japan in 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015 and last year really made me sad, because the shops like Super Potatoe look nothing like they did in 2010. They have much less games available.
I remember grabbing some games from tables for less than 100 YEN (PC Engine titles, RPGs)...and where the heck is the Famicom throne now???

Whats the situation these days in stores like Friends, Super Potatoe, Retro Game Camp and the likes? Is it only getting worse?

I will be in Japan this September and i hope to still be able to find some games iam looking for. Maybe somebody can tell me some good stores to look for retro games.
Super Potatoe in Osaka was not so bad last year.

Sad situation... :(

It is a shame but sort of inevitable.
When many of the chaps I know got into Shmups and retro gaming it was more over a continuation from what they had played all along so it wasn't like they were putting in lots of cash to make a huge collection.

But, also at that time these same people were regarded as being a bit weird for sticking with the old stuff. I was ridiculed by other gamers myself back in University with taunts such as "are you still playing your NES?" that sort of thing. Then Youtube happened and lo and behold it was socially acceptable and has not been the same since. Half the issue for us lot in the early days was to actually know that a given game existed - which is why I for one ended up on the Shmups website reading the Xenocide files and that was maybe 2000 or so give or take.

Youtube and all these nutters removed the stigma associated with people playing the old stuff and being happy to do so. Now what we see is that many are either getting into this era of gaming due to interest, money related as they think anything older than five years is valuable or some other reason.

With Japan being the centre for videogames and with nipponbashi in oosaka and akihabara in tokyo being centres for gaming and other things people from abroad ended up flocking there.

But you have to keep in mind that for a long time prices and availability were good in Japan. I pretty much always bought from Japan directly due to a combination of prices, quality and availability. With the Internet as it is many people can find out about these things now.

Also, there has been a demise in traditional shops as many people buy online and never visit a shop. I think we lose something when we lose shops and arcades personally. Half the fun of going to a book shop, comic shop or even a game shop is you just cannot foretell what you might find there.

Just regard it as par for the course :)

In a nutshell:

- The Internet has made it harder for brick and mortar shops in Japan to compete and has evened out the market globally.

- Blame people like yourself, me, and thousands of other enthusiasts who've been raiding Japanese shops and YAJ for years! :P

Anyway, I recommend reading this article, it explain the reasons quite well:

That's also sad in a way how you, guys, who were into stg/arcade for years or decades...

...but newcomers, they have less and less chances to get real thing (not ports or emulation). Look at that recent $7000 Blazing star purchase on ebay, for example.

To be honest one my friend took a look on this exact forum's BST section and get depressed because in SELL nearly nothing caught his eye while in WTB people list many great titles; i replied that, well, people dont wanna loose what they have and love. He answered that around 2012 there was more air, many interesting trade cases etc. :?

Happens all the time with all things, if only prized enough be some. I read icons venerated by Eastern Orthodoxy had only found favour as art with Western academics at dawn of 20th Century (and these days are collectable all over the world).

If you're looking to Akiba to do your used game shopping, you're going to be sorely disappointed in 2016. That place is more of a tourist trap than ever before, and gets worse with each passing year. I don't believe I've even been there in the last 2 months.. There's no point.

To get the goods these days, you need a car and a map of the countryside.

A good 9-10 years ago in university I used to hang out in Akiba all the time and bought all kinds of cool stuff there, but it's a really different place now. I still like to hang out there because the arcades are good and it's fun to look around at stuff, but I rarely buy anything. If you wanna make some decent purchases I would recommend either Trader or Mandrake. Their prices are fair for things that aren't always so easy to find. Even in the past couple years I've gotten some decent mid-tier stuff there at good prices.

On the subject of Super Potato specifically, I think the place was far less well known 10 years ago and the prices and deals you could get there reflected that. It was one of the best places to get deals on hardware back then, and it's actually where I bought my AES. But the place became kind of well known on the internet, especially in the west, and now it's nothing but a tourist destination. In fact, I swear 50% of the people I see shopping in there are foreigners. At this point the only people actually purchasing things from the place are tourists that don't know how jacked up the prices are.

That said, the little retro arcade above Super Potato (which didn't exist a decade ago) is one of my favorite places to hang out in Akiba and just kick back and relax. The selection of legit games isn't the greatest, but the place has a really great atmosphere with a cool retro dagashi store and it's got a legit DDP and Splatterhouse so I'm always happy to stop by for a couple credits. It's also one of the few places where you can just sit on the bench and loiter a bit and no one will mind. So yeah, I still hit up potato a lot, but not for the same reasons I once did.

Seeing as I'll be moving to Tokyo in like 4 days, can you give me any tips or recommendations of places to get cheap stuff in or around the city? It would be nice to hear from someone more knowledgeable about the current state of affairs there. You also said Narashino was your stomping ground right? Aside from that badass arcade in Tsudanuma, any shops I should be hitting up?

I know back in the day way down in Southern Bumfuck Chiba in a place called Hamano there was an absolutely epic game/comic store the size of a K-Mart. The staff was too lazy to price half the shit and would just give you things you found unpriced for 100 yen. Thanks for funding my AES collection Hamano! I wonder if that place is still around...

I went in 1996 for the first time and regularly from 1998 on. I cry now. No shit, one of my Facebook status updates from 2013 or so was. "First time in Akihabara in a year. We lost this place to the pedos."

The only old console I shop for anymore is the Saturn, and Akiba has some reliable outlets for the more desirable titles. Besides Batsugun, most Saturn games are reasonably priced and are usually in great condition.

I won't lie, though: if you're looking to save money and have the time to rummage through boxes of games, you can find some gems at Book Off and the like. I once walked out of Book Off with 15 games for about 1800 yen.

Ultimately, the older stuff (what anyone who scoffs at calling the Saturn old would want) is just too old for most places to carry in bulk anymore. Combined with other factors that others have mentioned (internet, steadily declining supply), it is getting harder to find these games, especially in the kind of condition most people would expect.

On the flip side, Akiba still has some great arcades. Hey and Try Tower are my favorites, but you really can't go wrong with any of them.

Well this is depressing to hear given that I'm heading to Tokyo in a couple of weeks :( I've heard similar things about the record stores too. At least I'll save lots of money I guess.

I recently found this tiny shop called "Maboroshi No Famicom Club" in Yamanashi-ken (about 60 min. from Tokyo) that's clearing out old stock. Got Harmful Park for ¥4500 and Magical Pop'n for ¥3000. They still had a ton of brand new Famicom and Mega Drive games in stock too. I'm not telling anyone the address though, cuz I don't want you suckers touching this stuff with your grubby hands! Image

No, the record stores are fucking dope still. There aren't as many, and if you're into Techno theirs basically only Technique in Shibuya and a few Disk Unions, but there are still plenty of shops. Disk Union in Shibuya is worth it alone, and they have many outlets in Shinjuku still. You need to really do a crate crawl, as you can find some deals that simply fly under the radar in the west. THere was something I was after for ages that is $50 minimum on Discogs and found in the creates for 1000 yen... twice.

Den Den Town > Akihabara. Actually, Osaka > Tokyo in general.

Though the best deals are to be found in Book Off / Hard Off stores located away from all the tourist traps. That said, the Book Off in Osaka's Doutonbori had a nice selection of retro games for reasonable prices imo.

You don't go to Akiba to buy games. You go there to buy cosplay outfits, eat at maid cafes, and play games in an arcade.

Are usenet feeds archived? I'd love to go digging in rec.arts.anime. I remember back in the 90's the few that ventured to Japan and scoured Akihabara would find cool shit but always be like, "I can't tell you the address b/c the shop owners don't like gaijin going in and buying all their stuff."

I should've just given everybody who PM'd me the address of some 7-eleven in Yamanashi. Would've been funny to have all these gaijin show up there, asking where the Maboroshi No Famicom Club is.
