Taito collections

Post by Guardians Knight »

i just noticed there are 2 taito collections released in japan for ps2 with loads of shoot em ups and cool old games on them, i also noticed there is a taito collection being released in europe, does anyone know if it is the same as one of the japan collections and whether there will be a second release?

also whats the games like are they arcade perfect, and is it worth picking them up?

Q: does anyone know if it is the same as one of the japan collections
A: No the Japanese and European collections are very different and the majority of the games are different.

Q: whether there will be a second release
A: There will

Q: whats the games like
A: Awesome

Q: are they arcade perfect
A: Nothing except an arcade machine is arcade perfect. The ports are solid, and the only real dissapointment is the scaled/filtered graphics and lack of tate.

Q: is it worth picking them up?
A: Yes it is mandatory for all self respecting gamers to pick them up

I've got both the Jap collections and they are well worth it just for the sheer number of classic games . . .BUT . . .

. . .as far as I'm concerned the best Taito game - Rainbow Islands - ain't on either of 'em.

Good news, though, because it appears on the first PAL collection . . .weird that, huh ????
Shoot, dodge, collect . . .it's the ONLY way to be !!

I have been on the fence too as to wait for a domestic release or go for the two imports alredy released. I am thinking of just biting the bullet and going for the imports seeing as how a stateside release hesn't even been nailed down yet. :?

If you can stand the filtered graphics and ignore the non-TATEd shmups the two JPN imports are well worth getting. I have the feeling they won't be making it out in the US. The one Sega of America is publishing is the first Euro collection, AFAIK.

Yeah, that's not new news. The collections are worthwhile for the non-shmup games.

Someone made athread saying the games are powered by MAME. I'd rather play the REAL stuff (play them in MAME.)
"Sooo, what was it that you consider a 'good salary' for a man to make?"
"They should at least make 100K to have a good life"

That's unknown for the Taito Memories games. They were just talking about the Taito Legends game (and soon to be 'games').

So what developer is behind Legends, then? I was hoping it was the Memories folks, but that'd probably be too much to ask.

Empire Interactive and some hired MAMEdevs are behind Taito Legends. I'm not sure who did Taito Memories but it doesn't seem to be the MAME folks.

Rainbow Islands Extra will be appearing on the PSP version of Taito Memories in January.

Taito Legends is finally available at play.com (14.99 GBP).

No need to say that if anyone is getting it these days, we're all awaiting impressions to see if these Mame guys did a good job. They aren't Digital Eclipse apparently, which is sorta weird: I thought Empire Interactive was just a publisher, not a developer.

Meanwhile, the official site is open, filled with flyers, interviews and stuff:

Good question. And does the US release have the same titles?

That game list is a bit nonsensical. It's like if they chose the games according to their emulation status more than the classic factor.

I get the same impression, yes. However, if their emulator does at least a good job with these relatively old titles, then the lineup is more than satisfying: Bubble Bobble, NZS, Rainbow Island, Rastan, Operation Wolf and Space Invaders are classic enough.

I disagree - the list is entirely representational for what was popular by Taito in Europe. Only real omission is Ninja Warriors. There are a couple of quirks - but welcome ones, Electric Yo-Yo for example.

Well, other than the ones I already mentioned, I'd say Space Gun and Operation Thunderbolt are the most recognizable brands.

Then again, what do I know, I'm relatively newbie when it comes to '80s arcade glories.

btw, is this "Phoenix" game related to the amiga game "Mega Phoenix"? Someone remembers it?

I assume it's a galaga clone from screenshots. Come on, enlighten me: why it is/was so popular in the UK (or in the whole world)?

1980! Wow, it came between Galaxian and Galaga. Now I can see where its fame came from.

And yes, the Amiga one made by Dinamic seems to be an unofficial sequel. Very cool, I might add. So in a sense I kenw it all along...

back on topic, Sega.com also has a preview page for the US version of Taito Legends:

http://www.sega.com/games/game_temp.php ... itolegends

It mentions flyers and interviews as bonus. I assume they're the same they have on the game's EU site.

A very positive review, from a site I often check when it comes to these collections. I didn't expect reviews so early!

Now let's just hope they included a 60hz selector with the PAL version...

Thanks, Turrican, for the link to info about the US version, which look to be the same. I'm a bit luke warm on the collection because it has fewer shmups than I'd have liked. However, if it sells well, I expect they'll issue a follow up collection, as Midway did in releasing their arcade classics.

 missed that, thanks Ganelon. I don't suppose a line-up for the follow up has been announced. I'll have to look into this. Because of the lack of tate I decided not to import the Japanese versions.

With Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands on the package it's sweet. But I'd like to see Parasol Stars (rumors abound there was a prototype PS arcade machine floating around), and Bubble Symphony, and Memories.

And I don't see Metal Black on that list, at one time older lists had the game on there, looks like it got cut. :(

I also see a lack of Liquid Kids and the Fairyland Story (addictive as Bubble Bobble to me), if these two were addedthe collection would kick even more ass.

Here's hoping to a volume 2 in the U.S..

Not yet, ganson. This board will be the first to know when it's announced.
