Anyone know this shmup enemy?

Post by Edge »

Ok, guys.

I remember the shape of an enemy in a shmup, but I just don't can't remember from what game.

I'm not even sure if it was an enemy or just a background ship you flew over.

So here comes my description:

It is big ship and you see it from above but at the back you can see the engine? (I mean the part where the boost comes out). It has a slightly isometric feel.

I have made a sketch to show you what I mean:

I know this is really a bad explanation, but that is really all I can remember.

I'd like to rip the graphic to use it for my own shmup project, but I can't find this ship. :?

hum.. don't know where it's from but the style of your sketchings would be much more unique than ripped sprites :-P

I know, that's really a beautiful MS Paint artwork. So You see, that's why I have to rip every single sprite and shouldn't draw anything by myself. :P

That looks like the big squid-jellyfish thing from Datastorm. I'll find you a screen-grab when I get home.

Axelay from Konami for SNES.
I bought the original way back when it was released, I anticipatedt his release and the gamestore would call me when it came in.
It was pure bliss.

What'd I win?

Thanks for all your help guys. :D

From the games you recommended I only played Axelay.

Well, I didn't mean the Axelay level 3 boss but maybe I'll just rip him. He looks not bad either. I just want those "pipes" where the boost comes out.
Maybe you have some good sugestions what else enemies have those.

The game I originally meant was propably a regular vertical shooter. Just this enemy looked a bit isometric, so that you could see a bit of his back. I didn't mean that the viewangle was very special. Maybe it was from Dodonpachi Dai Ou Jou?

As far as I remember the shape was fairly round and the skin was very smooth.

EDIT:
*lol* He really looks like a witch hat.

Now you have me interested in what this actually might be...

Your amazingly accurate rendering sorta resembles the stage 2 boss from Layer Section/Galatic Attack/Ray Force/GunLock/How-Many-More-Titles-Does-This-Game-Have.

I know, I know.
It's almost impossible to find exactly the ship I mean. But anything that looks somehow alike would be ok too.

I haven't played Layer Section so it's not from there.

Ok, another try:

So the black thing was the cockpit (I'm not really sure if there was a cockpit but just to show where the front and the back is).
And you could see the blue "boost pipes" under his skin.

EDIT:

Here, that's more like it:

The shape in the latest pic reminds me of some of the stealth bomber type planes in Strikers 1999 etc. maybe even the ones later in garegga.... - the large planes that clear the screen when you bomb in Strikers?

From the size of it, i guess it's either a boss or maybe one of the intro/support ships? The intro/support ship in DDP has some pretty large booster type things?

If it was smooth like that it might be that funny super-japanese shmup that has that ridiculous looking President in the story sequences. I forgot it's name - but it had smooth looking sprites.

I think your referring to Space Bomber (psikyo)

It looks like the UFO enemies or boss in that game.

I am reminded of the Stage 4 boss in Shienryu (before the mecha separates from the "mothership") but that's probably not it since the colors are wrong and I don't think there's a visible cockpit.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Do you recall the time period it was when you played the shmup? Was it on a console, arcade, etc? Maybe that'd narrow it down a bit...

Thanks again,

I'm sorry to tell you that the enemy was not among your sugestions. :?

I have checked Dodonpachi and some of the other games I played or know and that enemy was not among them.

@Bulletmagnet:
I have no idea where I know this sprite from, it just popped up in my mind when I was working on that project. Usually I remember enemies or sprites from games I played very well. But I have no idea where that image with the blue boost is from. I am afraid it could even be a non shmup game and I am starting to doubt my mind.

In the beginning I just wanted to rip a gfx, but now this thread has made me very curious about this mysterious sprite too.

Not a shmup, but it looks like the last boss in Area 51(the light-gun game).

I actually 1CC it with another dude, getting hit only twice. Thank God for grenades.
