The VR Shmups Thread

Post by Danny »

I was reading giantbomb today and found this article that states that REZ is coming to PS4 with VR support. Rez is a cool game and is probably one of the most suitable games for VR giving the current state of the hardware. So what do you guys think you think VR is a good fit for RES or Shmups in general?

Please post any thought and/or news concerning Shmups and VR here I guess!

TxK would have been awesome if it hadn't been killed.

You can take any non-VR content and project it onto an arbitrary screen in VR space, so I guess you could potentially have a "virtual cab" capable of playing any PC shmup, MAME roms included. Not sure what the cost comparison is vs having a physical cab running Windows.

It takes a shocking amount of resolution to display old arcade games properly on modern displays. Given that VR headsets already have screen door effect problems due to lack of resolution, it's an awful combination.

You'd need 8k resolution HMDs to be able to render games in MAME with a decent CRT shader without ugly artifacts.

Doubleposting but writing it here again, Jeff Minter is working on a game for PS VR too (not TxK)!

Now we need Child of Eden 2 alongside Rez and I'm sold :)

I recently posted a similar thread in off topic: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=55835

Hearing about Rez Infinite on the Playstion VR has me excited about this. As a huge Rez fan it think it would be way cool to hangout in this alternate world if you would, to finally be "in" the system for the first time. Similarly, a Panzer Dragoon Orta like VR romp would also be incredible as well.

From a technical standpoint, I think the tech will be fine to pull it off. It could be like Wii Sports Bowling. Not the most realistic looking bowling but the most realistic feeling bowling with the added motion controls. The more realistic hawk flying Playstation VR title gives a good indication of what can be pulled off and looks real enough at this point in time for a launch title or tech demo.

As far as shooters go I think they will utilize the ability to look around. Also I think the PS VR uses two move controllers. So I see a Starfox like game where you can look about and even behind you to blast the enemies and open doors and gates blocking your way. Using motion controls you will probably be able to fire in all directions. Or how about Robotron VR where you are down on the grid looking one way and shooting in a different direction. I hope this can be realized down the road.

Edit- also you will probably be able to use the headset as an alternative display for normal games. I would imagine playing a Tate oriented shooter will be like playing it on a vertical movie sceen from about the 10th row back, might be sweet.

Another Rez fanboy here. I just got a PS4 (for the whole family's Xmas present) last week, so I'm really excited to hear about this.

I also just played the demo of Vanguard V a couple of weeks back at a friends house wearing their Oculus headset and, despite the surprising amount of screen door pixel problems (I'd never tried on a VR headset before), I was essentially sold on the potential. It seemed like a solid Rez inspired game with ZOE style designs.

Hopefully along with some hardware improvements in the meantime to increase resolution etc, this update of Rez will try to fully realize this potential and we'll have an amazing experience on our hands.

Playing bullet hell shmups in VR would be like a Neo (matrix) simulator, dodging, absorbing, cancelling bullets, wiping popcorn enemies, etc.
