Nanostray

Post by Pshooter »

just got this on the DS. Graphics and presentation are pretty awesome. Gameplay is fun, but overall the game is a bit too hard/unforgiving. Anyone know any cheat codes or tips?

Now now, why would one use cheat codes?

If they had a cheat code that let you switch weapons using one of the buttons instead of having to use the touch screen, I'd be all over that.
You're arguing for a universe with fewer waffles in it. I'm prepared to call that cowardice.

well 90% of the challenge levels are impossible, but that's the only way to unlock anything. Even making it through an arcade level with 3 ships is a b!tch. They needed to at least have power ups that repaired damage.

Yeh, the game sucks. It tries too hard to be fancy but doesn't even have the basics of good gameplay down. The perspective is weird but even Silpheed didn't make it as annoying as Nanostray does. Bullets are obscured by the foreground, but Batrider made it somewhat acceptable. So many things went wrong with this game.

Oh yeah, and weapon switching is a bitch. I'd like a cheat code to map weapon switching to one of the freaking unused face buttons too. Not that I even play the game anymore because I have better games to play.

the controls i dont mind, you can just use the "L" button to fire (although your pinky on your left hand kills after a few playthroughs like this). I really dont mind the graphics or the gameplay. What p!sses me off is that there are no powerups to repair damage, and it's impossibe to get through basically any challenges. Even on arcade with 3 ships, it's a total b!tch to get through. Only adventure mode with 5 ships is somewhat enjoyable.

Agreed. :( Otherwise a good game. ^^ But it DEFINITELY needed an unused button to cycle through weapons. Without a screen-protector so one can use their thumb, that shit's WAAAAAAY too gimmicky.

I use that cheesy thumb pad on the wrist strap to tap the touch screen when playing Nanostray. Works pretty well, especially if you memorise where each weapon is located. Which isn't hard; there are only four.

I found all the challenges pretty easy. They just require you to use a different strategy depending on what the objective is. The only hard ones are the valour bonus missions, I haven't figured those out yet. The unlockable stuff mainly sucks. Just some pics to look at, I mainly wanted to unlock the songs which I rather like.

Overally I'd also say the game isn't all that great, although it has some neat features, such as "sucking in" the coins. I mainly spent a lot of time with the game since I only own one other DS game, and I had a long flight, otherwise it probably wouldn't have gotten that much playtime.

P.S. Batrider will teach you to respect bullet spray!

OK, maybe it didn't. But it's OK because Batrider is actually good. Well, to most people who know that Nanostray doesn't "come damn close" to matching Ikaruga.

Saw a couple of new copies at Toys R Us (!) today and since I bought a DS nearly a week before, figured I finallyt have the chance to check it out.

I love Iridion II, it borrowed so many elements from other shmups and succeeded in combining them to make a great game. Nanostray's pretty good so far too, right now I just beat the first three levels, and I've got to say Shin'en has kept up on creating some unique bosses. So far, I'm diggin it.

Worst thing is obviously the weapon switch system, and I'm also worried the game's short (after beating the first three levels, it said I was 25% done -- wha? I was hoping for more than 12 levels, even if that number of levels in a shmup are large).

In a coupla days I suppose I'll write Majesco a letter giving them kudos on releasing this game and for being badass.

My only complaint with this game is that switching weapons on the fly is pretty difficult to do in the heat of battle-other then that, Nanostray is an awesome shmup; especially if you like Euro-Shmups.

Haha, funny that everything you said here are reasons (but not the only reasons) why I hate this game :p

I just sold my copy...

*shrugs* Well, I don't have a problem remembering which weapons are which, and some work well for an entire stage. Nanostray isn't the best shmup I've played; not by far, but the postives still far outway the negatives, IMO.

Beat it this morning, was incredibly surprised to find out there were only 8 levels. I expected something a lot harder, too, coming from reviews and random comments; if by some chance I didn't beat a level the first time, I'd for sure get it the second time. Music wasn't as great as Iridion 2's, either. And as I post this, I realize Nanostray lacked a plot...maybe it's the manual. Yeah yeah, plots in shooters don't matter, but I'd beg to differ..

Anyways, turns out the real meat of the game are the Challenges. I can do the "Beat the level with 1 ship" challenges, but getting some of those scores...fuckin A, that's a whole different story.

Either way, thank God I bought Trauma Center.

I'd give NS an 8 outta 10, though. Because hell, it is pretty fun. Even though I never need to switch weapons (except for that one boss where I had to use the side arms*).

I'm really happy with the game. Definitely only for people that love score challenges though as that IS the game.

Shin'En is an odd bird. I loathed Iridion 3D. Iridion II is great stuff, and this is very good but somewhat lacking.

I believe your score is helped if you don't hold down the "grab powerup" button and actually fly out and get them instead. Plus you ever EVER want to miss a formation. In Sky Shark those yellow planes were a nice diversion to destroying turrets but here they're going to make up the meat of your score.
