Midway Arcade Treasures 3

Post by sethsez »

THEY RELEASED SAN FRANCISCO RUSH: 2049 IN FAKE LOW RES I CAN'T BELIEVE IT

...oh... wait.

So has anyone here picked this up? Personally, I found it hard to resist the lure of Hydro Thunder. :D

IMPRESSIONS OF THE XBOX VERSION (copied and pasted):

Hydro Thunder is still fantastic. Fast, stylish, and fun as hell. Also, it's held up very well graphically. Most of the tracks are just straight-foward linear courses (think Crusin' USA), but their design remains fantastic and there are plenty of shortcuts.

Rush 2049 is as entertaining as ever. I'm really amazed at how well it's held up, actually. I went into it expecting to compare it to Burnout 3 (haven't picked up Revenge) and be horribly disappointed, but they take such different approaches to XTREME!!! that Rush's brand of it still holds up remarkably well today. And I love going through the tracks in practice mode just looking for all the coins. It feels like a racing/platformer hybrid in a way then. I already unlocked everything on the DC one, but hey, it's worth going through again. Additionally, it does run in progressive scan for people who can take advantage of that (well, the whole set does).

Rush the Rock is good, and I'm glad it runs at a better framerate than the arcade, but was the music always MIDI? I could have sworn it wasn't, but then again, I always played it in noisy arcades so I didn't pay much attention. Either way, it plays better than the arcade version so I'm happy.

Off Road Thunder seems accurate (no frame rate fix though), but meh. It's always been utterly mediocre, and it remains so here.

STUN Runner is... hmm. The framerate seems to have been bumped up, which makes everything all twitchy. Fans of the game aren't going to be pleased, I'm afraid. On the other hand, Race Drivin' benefits IMMENSELY from the improved framerate. Too bad it's aged terribly.

Badlands and Super Off Road are the same as ever. I don't really like them, but hey.

Overall I think it's a pretty nice collection. Rush 2049 by itself offers a ton of replay value, so I don't understand the people I've seen on other boards who were complaining that it doesn't have 20 games like other collections. There may be less titles, but in terms of content this is still among the best compilations out there (I remember when just Rush 2049 and Hydro Thunder were announced as a double pack for $20 and I thought that was a good deal).

Worth the money.

I skipped it and picked up MAT 2 and Capcom Classics Collection a wekk or two apart, I do like Hydro Thunder on this compilation, but the Capcom deal was too sweet to pass up.

I'll get this one eventually (Rush 2049 alone makes it worth the price of admission, even if it is a straight port of the Dreamcast version) Rush the Rock's music was pretty forgettable if I recall (the arcade racer genre as a whole isn't particularly known for its music, with the exception of OutRun.)

DAYYYYTOOOONAAAA

And if it was forgettable, how can you recall it? OMG PARADOX

...

Yeah, the music sucks, I'm just surprised it's MIDI. I could have sworn the arcade had actual recorded music tracks. Maybe the cabinets just boosted the bass so much that it was impossible to tell (wouldn't surprise me).

for anyone who doesn't mind waiting a bit to play MAT3, gamestop.com is currently offering it as a preorder bonus with LA Rush (a $50 game).

If it turns out that you don't like LA Rush, you could probably trade it in for about $30 within the first couple of weeks after its release, thus bringing the total cost for MAT3 to about $20 - which is what it retails for anyway.

If you do end up liking LA Rush, then you've saved yourself 20 bucks by getting MAT3 included.

I hate preordering unless I get a worthwhile bonus. This certainly counts as such for me.

i had a coupon for free ups ground shipping on orders over $50 (Rush preorder was $49.99), so I scoured the site for the cheapest game available to add to my order. I guess everyone else has had this same idea because just about everything under 2 bucks was sold out.

I finally found a golf game for $1.49.

So I am proud of myself.

I ordered this a while back. Anybody know if the games support wheels + pedals? It'd be nice to give my Logitech GT3 some action again.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.
