20"PVM VS 23" LCD + XRGB-mini?

Post by jandrogo »

Maybe I am getting older or my eyes got used to LCD panels, but nowadays I can't stand more than 30' minutes in front the CRT monitor in my cab although it has a smoked screen. I love scanlines and how low resolution images are showed, but my eyes get very tired and I am playing with the idea of selling the cab in favor of desktop setup

I have the opportunity to buy a 20" PVM in my city (maybe smaller size would reduce my visual fatigue) or invest in a XRGB-mini to pair with my Nec EA23WMi.

Considering I have never seen a XRGB-mini in action, which of these 2 options would you choose and why? Any of you can do a side to side comparison or share experiences/ advises?

Kind regards.

1) Definitely the PVM (if it's in good shape!).
But you know since you are in Europe there are veeeeeery nice consumer Trinitrons around for cheap.
Sometimes those are less trouble, in particular the curved tube models, and still look awesome.

2) Expensive scalers make more sense for larger flat panel displays IMHO, for a 23" monitor it's too big an investment.
Marq's upcoming DIY scaler though, would make perfect sense: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=52158

In your place I'd get a PVM or Trinitron TV first, and later Marq's device when it becomes available.

3) Regarding eye fatigue: size is one thing, ambiant light matters as well.
LCD's can be harder on the eyes (especially some with LED backlighting) your monitor is CCFL which is okay~ish, but I doubt it will provide any relief.
Then of course you might want to get your vision checked by an ophtalmologist, because from your description it doesn't sound like just changing displays will help much if you have a nascent astigmatism or something.
