Any BomberMan Fans around?
I just recently discovered the Bomberman game thats included in the Gate of Thunder/ Bonk CD (Turbo Duo)
I realize what you need to do in the game, meaning I "get it", and I know more than one person can play at the same time...but, is the 1 player game supposed to be fun? It seems slow and tedious to me.
I've never really thought much of BomberMan before, it just never did anything for me, but now since I actually own a BomberMan game, I'm trying to give it a fair chance.
Nate seems to be a quite addicted fan, and I feel as though I may be missing out on something.

Just a little FYI, IMO the best single player Bomberman games are:
Super Bomberman (SNES)
Mega Bomberman (Genesis)
Saturn Bomberman (Saturn)
And the best multiplayer Bomberman games are:
Saturn Bomberman (Saturn)
Bomberman DS (Nintendo DS) (wireless w/ duel screens and 8 players? Yes!)
Mega Bomberman (Genesis)
So there you go. To be honest though, I haven't played the PCE Bomberman games.

Bomberman '94 kicks ass on the PCE platform...
I got Bomberman '94 as a Christmas present in December 1994 with a Kisado convertor (but the single wire broke off and had it sent back to Turbo Zone Direct which then sent me a Turbografx-16 boxy white colored Hu-Card convertor instead for a mere $5.00 USD more) and still have my Bomberman '94 with Hu-Card convertor to this very day to play on my TG-16/Turbo Express/Turbo Duo setup.
I managed to buy a new sealed TTI version of Bomberman '93 for a mere $5.00 USD from the Modesto, CA location of "The Good Guys" back in August of 1995. It was being sold as part of the "Manager's Special: All Games inside this Box are only $5.00!" special deal promotion. Otherwise, I'd have to pony up a fucking $34.99 for the spanking new copy of TTI's Bomberman '93 game if it wasn't a Manager's Special $5.00 deal. So I was indeed a happy camper on the day I bought BM-'93 for a mere fiver.
I bought the original USA version of NEC's Bomberman Hu-Card for the TG-16 and it kicked my ass in being able to play with four other different players...it was a riot!
Until Bomberman '93 and Bomberman '94 came along for the the PCE platform, it (NEC's TG-16 version of Bomberman Hu-Card) really needed some extra cool gameplay mechanics to "spice up" the gameplay which they did indeed deliver in spades. I like the kangaroo creatures featured in Bomberman '94 as they do give (up to 5 players with optional NEC's TurboTap or TTI's Duo Tap multi-player controller adapter) multi-player based games that crazy & insane addictiveness factor raised up a few notches higher.

Of course, you'd need two Sega Saturn multi-taps and ten Saturn game controllers for a 10 player SS Bomberman session showdown...that's means plunking down some $$$ to play with that SS Bomberman gaming setup.undamned wrote:Isn't that like "does anybody around here breath air?"TWITCHDOCTOR wrote:Any BomberMan Fans around?

I recall that NEC did make a PC Engine prototype console capabable of playing a modified PCE Bomberman game on a HD widescreen monitor...a pic of it was shown in an old issue of Next Generation video game magazine in the late 1990's. I wonder how that particular widescreen version of HD-enabled PCE Bomberman plays?

I have Atomic Punk and Bomberman GB (US) for GB b/w. I like both of these quite a bit. Atomic Punk has a good variety of levels with some types unique to the game like a level made up of opening and closing warps and a desert level with moving sand. Unlike most other Bomberman games, powerups can be bought in shops as well as earned in levels. The powerups are chosen before levels, unlike most Bomberman games. One cool bonus with Atomic is that the original NES Bomberman comes with it, even if it's nowhere near as good as Atomic Punk (IMO).
Bomberman GB is also very good. It has mission based levels with two different paths to choose from at the beginning of each stage. Each path has its own unique levels. One cool feature is that you can play four players on SNES using a four player adapter and Super Game Boy.

My favourite Bomberman game has always been the very first one on PCE. I just think that adding more extras in later updates shifted the game balance in favour of more experienced players who actually know how to handle the new extras and the dinosaurs. The first Bomberman has the advantage that anyone, even if he/she hasn't touched a controller before, can pick it up, understand the game fully within a few minutes and have fun with it. Since everything is so simplistic, the rookie and the veteran both have roughly the same chance of winning a match. This doesn't work in later Bomberman games.
I usually use 5P rounds of PCE Bomberman to drag non-gamers over to the dark side. It has never failed me. Even people (including many a girl - wow) who always said "Nahh, videogames do nothing for me" before will find themselves begging me for "just one more match" five hours later when I start to pack away the PCE.
And yes, the solo player mode is quite tedious. I beat it within two days and have never touched it since. Bomberman is all about multiplayer.
(Saturn Bomberman is great, too. Got to get my hands on the DS one.)

I agree with Herr Schatten completely on this one.
The single-player mode in every Bomberman game I've tried is boring.
The multi-player is great, and I also think it's at its best when it's kept simple. Too many extraneous options and gimmicks makes it less fun somehow. The original PCE game is also my favourite -- nothing flashy, just you and four friends trying to blast eachother out of existence. (It's always extra tough for the green guy who has to start in the middle though.)
Definitely one of the very best multi-player games I've played.

I'm kinda starting to like it now. (3 in one pack in CD/Bonk Gates Thunder.etc)
I don't know what version it is, it just says BomberMan.
Anyway, it will allow up to 5 players. The solo game seems to have level progressions, as well as powerups. Also, you feel like you're getting somewhere, as its sort of laid out like a platformer.
My question is, does the multiplayer feature this "story/quest" mode, or is it some sort of kill each other/last man standing death match?
I guess BomberMan is slightly influenced by games like Gauntlet, but with "cute" characters, and added puzzle elements. I may become of fan of this game yet!

That's the first one, the one me and BydoBasher were referring to.TWITCHDOCTOR wrote:I'm kinda starting to like it now. (3 in one pack in CD/Bonk Gates Thunder.etc)

The multiplayer mode is death match only. The story mode only exists in the soloplayer mode.My question is, does the multiplayer feature this "story/quest" mode, or is it some sort of kill each other/last man standing death match?

Bomberman's always been a favorite of mine for a long time, and I've tried to play any version i could get my hands on, sadly all I own is Bomberman Vs. Wario for the original Gameboy, I'll sooner or later try to pick up some of the other titles sooner or later (I emu all the titles I can for this series), cause they do make great party games.
But the other arenas can be played with max 8 players.
one player single mode fun games:
Dreamcast Online, great one player game.
Saturn version also pretty okayish.
Bomberman rocks, best multiplayer game ever.
The Genesis/megadrive version is great.
There are bout three or four Super Nintendo version around too.
Great stuff.
If a Dutch Smeet were ever to occur this would be shmeet/Bomberman party

I first played Bomberman in the late 80s on the 8-bit Famicom. Although playing the one player mode wasn't too bad, it didn't quite capture my attention. Eventually I got to play it the way it was meant--that is competitively against 3 or more other players. Since then I've been a huge fan and my personal favorites are (in order of preference): Saturn Bomberman, Super Bomberman 2 and Mega Bomberman.

Ok, its official...I'm a dedicated fan of Bomberman!
My favorites are the original one, 93, and the two for SNES (Super Bomberman 1&2)
I've still yet to play the Saturn version, so I hope its as good as everyone says it is, because I'm really having a "blast" with the ones I mentioned.
I even enjoyed multiplayer (2 players VS. two computer men) with the SNES versions.
I would like to purchase Bomberman 93 for the Turbo...it doesn't matter what region it is, but I suspect this one is rare. I've seen some on Ebay, and they can be quite expensive!
Definately a planned future purchase...when I have the extra money.
I may make a small list of games I could trade for some Bomberman titles, when I do, I'll list it here in the "Trading Station" .

Me and my friends are always down for some Saturn multitap games since me and one other of my friends are big saturn collectors both with multitaps and loads of pads.
We are always either playing on Satun Bomberman, Deathtank Zwei (you must play that game!!) and of course Guardian Heroes as well as some Sonic R if we can be bothered after playing the other three games.
The Saturn Bomberman does have an intresting array of both single and multiplayer modes, plus it's ten player which is the reasion why it's considered to be on of the better reincarnations of the classic blow-em-up.
But I must say thism the most intresting single player games have always been the arcade one due to the fact that all of the laster ones at least can be played co-op on story mode which I felt was kinda cool. The Neo Geo Bomberman was also brillant because you could resuce 'bots' which were like the AI controled players in the standard battle games but they would ad you in the quest to compelete the story mode game, possably the best innovation in a bomberman game that I have seen.

I love BM on the SS, I have the multitap as well and at least 4 or 5 pads.
The music, graphics and sounds are absolutely fantastic. The only thing I dont like about it is the extra options which allow super bombs, stealing, reincarnations..
Some of the levels are tedious too. But you dont have to play them obviously. You can do teams, you can even have computer controlled guys on your team to fill the matrix.
Its nice to gang up on people you don't like

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
I love the bonus Bomberman game in the Gate of Thunder CD. Sure it's just BMan 1 but better than the NES rev (as far as I can tell).
Bomberman 93 and 94 rock in both single and multi, me and my friends play '94 multi every time we get together.
Still don't own SS BMan.
Bomberman Online almost never worked, worst servers EVER.
