I'd recommend:

R-Type Final = this ones gets lots of criticism, so why not grab and see for yourself... Aww, is the End of the war with the Bydo, I think no shmupper should ditch because of some slowdown.

Psyvariar Complete = the buzz system is nicely done, the disc comes with both Psyvariar editions, and it's possible to save you replays on memory card. Ace!

Gradius III & IV = I list this one at the bottom because, sadly, unlike the two above, it lacks 60hz option
But it's a fine compilation nonetheless.

Ops, sorry, didn't catch the all genres bit.

Then, let's see.... MGS2 Sons of Liberty, Silent Hill 2 Director's Cut, Ico, GTA San Andreas. These are my favorites... Ok, Snake Eater too.

Another very special game is Prince of Persia - Sands of Time.

Onimusha trilogy is the best when it comes to action imho.

Silent Hill 3 and Project Zero I & II are among the best horror games.

Zone of the Enders is good for its sci-fi anime theme, although one my have gripes on gameplay.

For rpgs, Shadow Heart(s) are my choice (since well, you can't have Suikoden III PAL).

Activision Anthology gets the special prize because, come on, there's nothing better than using a PS2 -sam-launching-device to play Pitfall II and H.E.R.O.

If you want to break your dualshock and die of frustration, you can't go wrong with Shinobi and Contra SS.

Finally, my "hidden gems" prize goes to Sub Rebellion and Gregory Horror Show.

Have fun.

Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution. Probably the best fighter in existence and it's very cheap. Contra Shattered Soldier is pretty cool (and very hard), as is Neo Contra.

As for shmups, most of the PAL shmups are very cheap. You shouldn't have to pay any more than a tenner for Strikers, Gunbird, Psyvariar, XII Stag, Steel Dragon EX, Silpheed or R-Type Final. Gradius 3 + 4 is usually a few quid more.

oh man, that's terrible. the sequel won't even work without the original game. i mean, you can still play it and enjoy it i'm sure, but the sequel is more of an expansion pack rather than a full game. at least, as far as i'm concerned.

okay okay! I'll get it Ord.

Been reading about it and la purcelle tactics seem similar.... Disagea seems better I'll definetly check it out if its similar to shining force.

To be honest I'm after something more mature and adult in an rpg. that shadow hearts covenant sounds a bit darker maybe more my style.

Saw metal slug 3 in a shop the other day, whats the conversion like?

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter (a spinoff that's unrelated to the normal series and plays completely different) may be worth looking into. It's a very dark game; it plays out all in one underworld with a fusion of strategy-RPG and survival horror aspects.

Ico is sublime.
Check out Ring Of Red as well. There is a thread about it, but I thought it was a pretty decent stratagy RPG.

I second that, it really is a fantastic game.

Just ordered disgaea, I got impatient. Not such a wise move seeing as I've yet to finish ring of red, and I've got much to do in espgaluda... But fuck it looks good!

Please make sure you play all things Shin Megami Tensei. SMT: Nocturne is hands down my favorite RPG of this generation and the spin off series Digital Devil Saga is incredible as well. I am not sure if the games were treated to a pal release but they are definitely worth going the import route if you have to. In fact DDS 2 was just released last week here in the states.
