Running PS1 games on PS2

Post by azmun »

Has anyone noticed any difference running or playing PlayStation (PS/PS1/PSX) games on PlayStation2 (PS2)? Among the fat and slim, you had several revisions of PS2. Recently, I noticed how bad PS games looked on our fat PS2 (SCPH-35001) via s-video. It's almost just as bad as composite. The colors are off and bleed. However, I ran those same games on the latest variant (SCPH-90001) and the visuals were much better--cleaner and truer to the s-video signal I've come to expect.

I understand the fat PS2 has or uses actual/original PS1 hardware while newer PS2 consoles ran on software emulation via an upgraded and faster processor. Would be interesting to know if there are any other such differences that exist.

Just a month old: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=54513

I don't know about differences between fat and slim PS2s, though I used to have a 30004 and found it to be excruciatingly loud with PS2 games, probably louder than an original Xbox 360 as far as the drive reading sounds went.

There are differences in regards to visual glitches, playability and such.

But as far as Video output quality AFIK there shouldn't be any differences.

I've never used S-Video, only Component and Composite so I couldn't say

ps1 cpu is in the ps2 as a timing chip, there were variants I think although the changes were less significant than the ps2's own cpu variants. Interestingly enough it was the same chip as was used to guide that recent pluto probe...

The rendering is still done via whatever custom nvidia chip was in there [not whatever was in the ps1] which interfaced with the playstation driver they developed [of which there were several versions].

In operational terms people don't really consider it emulation since the bulk is done by an actual bit of identical hardware. But the very presence of that ps1 driver is faily self explanatory you're not looking at a straight 1:1... incidentally those driver config settings will allow you to change the texture filter off/on [might make a difference here if it's 'on' - more faithful to original is to have it off?] as well as cd speed... might depend which version of the driver is on your ps2; which also might also effect how it looks in terms of minor bugs/differences...

As for svideo idk - perhaps try another cable some are definitely more prone to inference than others in my (limited) experience (being the lucky euro/rgb type :).

I use those cool thick nuke shielded Monster Game S-Video cables on the ol' PS2 and it works like a charm. Still have the Monster Game PS2 Component Video Cables as well.

ive played final fantasy 8 on my ps2, i have a ps1 as well, i can't notice any difference really, if anything my ps2 makes it look better because i use component cables. another benefit of running the games on ps2 is the texture smoothing feature for ps1 games, its a small enhancement but it does make games like ff8 look better.

i have the slim ps2.

Doesn't texture smoothing just apply a crappy bilinear filter over everything? You'd lose a lot of sharpness that way.

Texture smoothing in PSX games does look bad, but it's not enabled by default. Games with serious compatibility issues are a pretty rare breed, but unfortunately a couple of darn good shmups suffers from them. Some of the wearier PS2s have troubles playing audio CDs (even when games work mostly fine on them), but the only game where I thought it could have been the cause of malfunctioning was Vib-Ribbon.
RGB (from all of my SD consoles in fact) on CRTs looked all alike to me, but of course on a PS2 you can get component signal from PSX games as well.
