Uhmm... Malc?

Post by JBC »

I was just wondering if this Malc fella that created this site that we go to all the time posts here? It's just kinda wierd that he would create a site with a forum and yet never appear. Makes me think of christianity lol...

LOOL!

But yeah, I had the privilege to speak with the master on the mk2 forum. He was kind enough to redirect me to the new www.shmups.com while I was still unaware of its existence. ^_^

Btw, is mk2 site still online?

Malc created the site, but not the forum. Bloodflowers pretty much runs the forums since it crashed a year ago or so on gamespy networks. Maybe Malc is still in charge of the reviews but thats about it.

Personally I'd love to see shmups.com turn to WIKI to allow more people to control the content. Get all the strategy guides out of the forum and onto pages along side the reviews. I know Rando has been doing a load of reviews on his personal blog...but seems like they will never make it here.

Malc's userid is, "malc" and he has made 39 posts since the new forums started in January, pretty much all of those being in the trading section:
http://forum.shmups.com/forum/profile.p ... rofile&u=3
http://forum.shmups.com/forum/search.ph ... uthor=malc

I believe Malc has been getting out of the shmup hobby due to personal illness. What this means to the site I don't know.

Yeah, I saw his big sale threads and was a bit sad about that too. I knew something must have been up for the guy to be selling all the shooters he owned but I didn't feel good asking about it..

I believe that the shmups.com site is under the care of Akira and another maintainer while Malc is absent. The site will still be alive regardless of whether Malc is active in the community or not.

It's good that Malc is taking some time off anyway. He's been majorly busy with real life things like work, so getting away from the "unpaid time-consuming second job" as it were is better all round for him. Malc, if you're reading, hope things are going well, mate. Get in touch ^_^

Rando has asked me to archive his written ST guides at featheredwings.net for safety, and they'll make an appearance when I get some time to sort them and HTML'ise them. Ditto for mine. The original guides (and the new forthcoming stuff) will still be available here, of course.

If any of the other ST thread writers would like their stuff archived at fw.net, please get in touch ^_-

The old Shmups Mark2 has been absorbed by shmups.com. Going to classicgaming.com/shmups will redirect you to shmups.com. I think most of the reviews are still hosted at ClassicGaming though, due to Malc's webhosts' limited space, just changed graphically to fit the design of the main site.

Malc is fine, he's just been busy with personal life is all. Part of that, as so often happens, is rationalising collections and so on. As far as I'm aware, he's the only person able to maintain the main shmups.com website, so everyone will have to be patient (including me - I've got pending reviews to be uploaded).

Akira and myself are currently looking after the forums, no issues there, and when Malc has more time on his hands, hopefully he will return to being an active admin here too.

If you want to get in contact with Malc, the best way to do so is to email him; you can find his email address on www.shmups.com . He responds pretty quickly, and friendly, to emails. I have not had any luck whatsoever PM'ing him since he was a mod on this site.

Or how about opening it up to Wiki?

Wikis are Satan. No really, the idea of allowing other people to modify content on a site is crazed hippy talk ;-)

Personally I don't have time to worry about the main shmups.com site, I don't know if Akira does. I'll drop a mail to Malc tonight and see what his suggestion is.

There's plenty of fresh material up. Every time I get on there, it seems like t there are new reviews. I don't see any major problems with shmups.com.

Um, what are you talking about? As you can clearly see from the main page, the last update was in March. There haven't been any reviews posted since although I'm sure they exist offline. Rando's stuff could be up there too.

allo chaps!

Aye, I've been away for bloody ages havent I. Yeh, last proper update was in march.

I'm lucky that Bloodflowers especially, and the other admins, indeed, all the forum posters here exist - as the rest of the site is pretty dead at the mo. I keep getting questions and emails from people saying you should hand the site over to somebody else, update it and stuff but - well, its my site isnt it and I like to think I will get back into it sometime. I have a bunch of reviews which havent been forgotten about, they are here waiting for a rainy sunday to do.....

I havent forgotten about shmups the site, or the people involved, or shmups the games either. But at this time I have huge amounts of personal stuff to deal with, and shmups generally has been put on the back burner til its all dealt with. I'm still going through a messy separation at the moment, and am trying to concentrate on my daughter mostly. Its taking longer than I thought, and is harder than anything else I've done. But I'm getting there.

As for flogging all my pcbs - man, it hurts. I spent ages getting some really cool and rare stuff and I miss it lots. I've got rid of all my arcade cabs too - nothing left, not even a supergun. I'm still ebaying a pcb or two a week, until theyre all gone.

But hey - I'm loving handhelds at the moment!! Got meself a nice white PSP with star soldier and sengoku ace III on it, and my DS is getting a lot of play with Castlevania on it. Mostly though its my GB micro thats getting played most - a tiny thing it is indeed and you hardly know its in your pocket. Love it. Most of my consoles are sadly in boxes at this time but I'll dig them out sometime and dust them off.

So yeh, I'm not dead. And neither am I uncaring about this place. I love it. But I just dont have the time for it right now, and I want to keep it to when I DO get back into putting reviews up. Bear with me please!

Cheers peeps - and hi again to Bloodf who totally took over the forum responsibilities and made it something brill. I really should at LEAST mention him as co-owner of the site on the front page or something. byebye for now and .... in the words of the governor of california - I'll be back.... malc

Just like you I'm enjoying handhelds too lately, it's been exciting with the launches of the PSP, DS and GB Micro - all reinventing portable gaming in some ways. I think this area of gaming will just continue to gain popularity...

Thanks for the update Malc! :D I've really been enjoying handhelds a great deal too-I've got a DS, and I love it! Really great what Namco's done on it with Pac Man! And Gunstar Super Heroes just plain rocks! I'm getting a PSP for Christmas; and looking forward to some great shmupping action on that-please do let us know sometime what you think of Sengoku Cannon! I hope things are going well with your anxiety! God Bless, and funny comment on Arnold-people in other countries, like the UK, must think we're nuts electing actors to office like this-but then they probably already do think we're nuts!

I agree that the portable side of things seems to be where it's at right now. I haven't bothered with a PSP yet (might grab one for the Gradius pack, but at this point I'm not sure I'd trust a toaster made by Sony in my house after this latest rootkit fiasco...) As with you, all my consoles are currently residing in the closet as online poker, my growing arcade collection and my DS are taking up the vast majority of my gaming time right now. I've thought about an Xbox360, but at this point I remain undecided on whether or not to try to pick one up at launch (it seems unlikely I'd be able to anyway, the local Best Buy is getting a large allocation for a midnight launch, but I suspect it would take most of a day's worth of camping in line to get one.) The new Geometry Wars looks like it's going to be a lot of fun though...

A Sony toaster would probably jack into your wireless network, install anti-burning software on your Mac so you couldn't use Toast, and transmit usage data to Sony letting them know your name, IP address, and how many slices of bread you've used so far.

Now that's hardware integration for you.

My Sony toaster only works when i turn it on it's side AFTER inserting the toast. Once it's done cooking i have to turn it back upright. Sometimes it overheats though, and no longer works on Sunbeam bread.
