What's the most gruesome thing you've ever seen irl?
What's the most gruesome thing you've ever seen irl?
This is a story from when I was maybe around 8 years old.
I live in a rural area with lots of farmland & such. There's a field behind my house that, at least back in the 80's, used to be harvested for hay bales. One day my sister & I were playing outside & heard a scream over the machinery. We ran to it & saw our neighbor, Mr. Delton, with his arm caught in the baler. As soon as we got to him his arm came off, & I remember seeing tatters of skin stretching out & spinning into the spool of hay. Really, his screaming made it worse than the actual sight. He flailed around on the ground for a minute & then screamed for us to go get help.
Just for the sake of following up, he survived. We got our sitter to call an ambulance right away & he lived for another decade at least. He would drunkenly walk the same road sipping from half pint bottles I still find near the edge of the woods. And guess what??? He only had one arm lol
Anyway, I worked ER security at a hospital for over a year recently & it's still the goriest thing I've ever witnessed. What's yours?

An old drunk man stumble a bit, then fall (jump?) off the platform directly into the path of an oncoming train.
I always thought that seeing something like that would be traumatizing and alter me.. but it hasn't.

I went on a trauma code at work and saw a baby admitted with multiple stab wounds. Baby died, of course.
I've gone on codes where kids have had their chests open, gaping head wounds from gunshots, but the baby stabbing victim was the worst.
When I first started working in pharmacy, I was excited and anxious to go on codes, to see some crazy shit, but after two or three traumas, the novelty wears off.

nothing as bad as what's itt already, but training to square up in hockey during my major midgets year, came across with my right and my middle knuckle split down the middle and my ring finger knuckle flipped upside down. my coach through I dislocated it and he tried to pop it back into place before I had to go to the hospital. had a soft cast on my arm, and my buddies just finished a bmx trail section somewhat by my place. I was the first one to hit the new section with my bike (with my soft cast on) and I wiped/dislocated my shoulder.
last season (couple months ago) in my men's league game, an offensive player on the other team took a 50-60mph slapshot to the mouth from his teammate holding the point. The idiot was wearing a half shield of course. I was tying up another teammate next to him and when he dropped down to the ice, I asked if he was okay and blood starting squirting out of his gums. he lost a couple teeth too.
last year my roommate got home from work and he had two boxes on his arms (stacked on top of each other). I was in the living room taking the first bite of my beef sandwich. He kicked the door closed and our cat tried to run out at the same time. I heard a big yip, and the cat ran into the living room - where I was sitting - with his tail between his legs. Then I saw that he was missing 1/3rd of his tail - the tip where it separated looked like a wet noodle with a blood dripping down it. roommate said he was going to take him to the emergency vet, and I threw away my one-bite beef sandwich and went to sleep.

Also I once saw a herd of deer get plowed over by a semi, trailing gore down the freeway. Since people just keep driving over stuff like that, it eventually became a red slick coating the road thick enough to make a car lose traction.

When I was about 10 I saw a 12 year old kid get shot in head with a plastic bullet as I was leaving a shop during a riot. A few people came with sheets and carried him away. The thing I remember most was how quickly the sheets turned from white to red. Could have been me, I suppose. A little later I was having dinner with my parents and on the 6pm BBC News they said he was a terrorist.

I worked as a carpenter and during my apprenticeship we were on a construction site in East Germany. As we wanted to end the work for the day we heard a scream. We went back to the construction site (we were already at our truck) and looked around. We found one of the bricklayers laying on the ground. He fell down from the 6 meter (nearly 20 feet) wall - as if that alone wouldn't have been bad enough he felt on a place were lots of metal rods jut out of the concrete floor. Four of the metal rods hit his body and pierced through. Two trough the chest, one through the belly and one trough the thigh. Of course we called the ambulance right away (remember this was when nearly nobody had a Handy) but the problem was to get him off the metal rods since all 4 of them stood out 1 meter (3 feet) from his body
. And all 4 pointed in another direction - so it was impossible to lift him so high to get rid of the metal rods. So we made the only thing we could think of - 4 of us lifted his body slightly and one guy flexed off the metal rods underneath his body. The ambulance took him with the metal rods in the ambulance car.

Re: What's the most gruesome thing you've ever seen irl?
For being a part of but not witnessing me and my wife were visiting her cousin a few years back and while on the undergoing subway as we were approaching the next stop the driver slammed on the subway brakes and there was a thud I guess you'd call it. Everyone in the subway car gasped and then someone came on the intercom and said to remain calm as we're were going to be here for a while. Someone jumped in front of the subway as a means of suicide. Her cousin said it happens more frequently than you think sadly. 45 minutes later we pulled all the way up to the station and got off and everyone around there was acting like nothing happened... okay.
As far as witnessing something I was in my early teens 13-14 and me and a few buddies had small motocross bikes as we lived out in the country farm fields. My one friend was always the daredevil and him and his dad had made some dirt jumps for us to use. No one wanted to attempt the biggest one so he did. His legs flew off the bike midair but he held on. Bashed his helmet against the Gas tank and he would have been fine except he basically bit his own tongue right off. It was hanging on by a thread, blood EVERYWHERE. He ended up coming home from the hospital a few days later with half a tongue right where he but it clean off basically. Obviously from there on his speech was permanently altered but he was always a happy go lucky person so he really wasn't super traumatized by it. We were back riding again the next week

Some-Mist's cat story reminds me of the time I pulled a mouse out of a glue trap. The mouse lived, but part of its tail didn't. I don't know how much pain it was in, but it did start licking the part of its tail that lost the tip right away. Possibly did fine, but I'll never know.

Walked past an accident right after it happened - skateboarder hit by a cab - head squished to shit, just lying on the sidewalk. Read afterwards apparently the skateboarder and cabbie exchanged words in the intersection, cabbie took issue with whatever was said and jumped the curb...in the cab... and took out the skateboarder on the sidewalk.
Also saw an old lady get smoked by a bus when I was a little kid, but don't remember any details except her dentures in a pool of blood on the side of the street.
Had some pretty nasty looking breaks from skating; last time I broke my left wrist, it broke clean across in 2 spots, so with my arm straight out, it broke and went straight up, and then broke again and went straight forward...that was fun to set. Also, smoked my shin really bad at a skate park one day, resulting in about 4-6 inches of exposed shin bone. 70 something stitches, including 2 internal rows to hold the flap down, and I couldn't walk for 2 months. Good times

Can't recall any particularly nasty stuff firsthand. Got a good look at the inner workings of my best friend's forearm after he foolishly leaned his weight on a ceramic towel holder, which promptly gave way for gravity-powered razor action. Bathroom looked like a murder scene, though he's fucking lucky it didn't get his neck on the way down.

Luckily, the only gruesome thing was seeing bits of deer on the highway. The thing was completely obliterated across maybe 200 feet, blood and guts everywhere.
Re: What's the most gruesome thing you've ever seen irl?
Also, my worst memory isn't gore but disaster-related. Hurricane fucked up my country, entire island without power, hey maybe this fridge has some less-perishables! Oh actually it was full of raw meat. Stench knocked me flat on my ass (much like chattering teeth I hadn't known this actually happens IRL). I have nightmares where I'm compelled to eat the stuff inside at gunpoint to save a loved one. I want to believe I'd do it but I know I'd go irreparably insane in the process. >_<

Re: What's the most gruesome thing you've ever seen irl?
Luckily I have avoided witnessing extreme violence or gruesome events in my 36 years on earth. One that does stick in my mind is witnessing a friend getting hit by a car and getting launched 10 foot into the air and landing on his head. I thought he was dead for sure, he lost what appeared to be a couple of pints of blood within minutes, amazingly he survived with no lasting effects.

My dad used to be a biker. He's the best driver around so he pretty much never had any accidents.
Of course, this didn't prevent him from losing control on a particularly slippery bit of road, it was the first time he ever fell off the bike, and he came back with half of his knee gone.
It healed and he stopped much later, but it was painful to look at. So painful that I remember it even now.
I have worse though.
When I was like six, I spilled infernal soup all over my leg.
The skin was gone, I had to wear bandages for like a year and replace them every few days, the new skin would rip off along with the bandages and it would start bleeding again.
I had a scar too, but it healed many years later.

Thank goodness Gantz isn't real life; it's the most gruesomely detailed "mainstream" manga I've ever seen, and it keeps the roller-coaster ride going in volume after volume. I read it religiously through for a while, but it was somewhat draining.
