Trinitron Geometry Question

Post by evil_ash_xero »

I have some issues with the geometry on both of my Trinitrons. I don't really know what's up with it. I thought one just had some wonky settings, but then the other TV has almost the exact same picture with the systems hooked up to it. I also hooked some stuff up via composite, directly into the TV, rather than a switch, and it's still the same.

I have tinkered with the geometry, in the settings, but I'm not sure if I can really "fix" the issues that are present. The best way I can describe it, is the picture looks kind of like this:

THIS IS NOT MY TV. I saw this on Racketboy, and it looks just about exactly what I have going on. Kind of an upward bow. It's slight, but it's there, and I notice it.

Any idea what settings I could mess with, to fix this? It's irritating, but I don't really know much about working with TV geometry.

I've had an upward bow, mostly in the bottom middle section, on all 3 consumer Trinitrons I've owned, as far as I know it's just a common problem with them.

Yeah, it's one of the more noticeable and thus annoying geometry problems. I've seen pictures of a couple people's TVs that didn't have any bowing, but I haven't lucked out yet. Still considering looking into CRT repair shops if they exist here, but I don't have a good judgement on whether my convergence/geometry is actually bad or if I'm just being a perfectionist about it.

I've got one on my kv-27fs120 too.

Honestly, what's pictured at the top of this thread has even better geometry than all arcade monitors I own. Seriously, these are not computer monitors, so you can't expect perfectly straight edges if you aren't extending beyond the screen borders. I know this sounds stupid, but its something you need to get over or just expand the picture slightly past the edges.

This is something all arcade cabinet owners experience and also have to get over. Funny how you almost never notice it when you are in an actual arcade.

Bowing also changes with the brightness of screen content on crts. Electrons don't like each other very much.

What causes all this bowing, anyway?

I was just kind of blown away, when I had both TVs on, and the systems running into both of them...and they had almost the same exact problems. I did have to adjust an angle on the 36 inch, as it was a little too off. But that bowing....I can't do a damn thing about it.

Well, knowing it's really common, makes me feel better about the situation. I've seen much worse bowing, on the net.

I wonder if achieving perfect geometry on a consumer level flat crt tv is impossible? I've owned JVC and Sony flat CRTs and they both had some form of bowing that I was unable to correct in the service menus.

There's no circuitry built-in to adjust bowing along the horizontal axis, just the vertical to an extent. Maybe something could be done with magnets, I know some are placed behind the tube at the factory for corner geometry and convergence. Never heard of any attempts at it though (maybe one on reddit for corner convergence...).

EDIT: Found the reddit post I was thinking of, this person's set has what I would assume is the best geometry you could get with a consumer CRT, and it's a 32" model even. Especially apparent on the Super Metroid pause screen. https://www.reddit.com/r/gamecollecting ... alibrated/

I have a 2006 KD-27FS170 I purchased a few months back, and it too has a slight (about one scanline) vertical shift/warp on the screen. Not bad compared to many sets, apparently, but definitely not perfect either. I was able to do only so much in the service menu.

I suspect repositioning magnetic strips would be the only way of getting it any better. Ive decided its plenty good as is.
