I won this.
It's five or 10 freaking miles away from where I live. The seller wants 15 dollars for shipping. Doesn't want me to go pick it up (wonder if he's one of those guys whose immune system doesn't work). F***wad. I'm getting a memory card and an extra controller with it... but can't shake the feeling I was better off buying a refurb core unit from Lamestop for 99 plus tax.

yaton6262 is located maybe 15 or 20 km from where I live, I bought a bunch of stuff from him and got it shipped every time for $8 USD (gah.....) but I'm busy during the week and I don't really go to his area on the weekends either so it's really inconvenient for me to pick up :\
I don't know if what you paid is such a good price since a new PSTwo doesn't cost much more (after you add your shipping costs)..

I thought was like 90% of eBay sellers' M.O., sell for a great or decent price then RAPE THEM WITH THE SHIPPING. Do you know how many games I've gotten from eBay that had shipping set to 5 bucks, only for the game to come in a plain US Post Office brown envelope marked at $1.59 for shipping? Too many...Bastard must be trying to keep the shipping money for himself.

now tighter than your sister
It's their way of offsetting the fees incurred by eBay and PayPal. eBay charges for the final price, excluding shipping. So, it's also a way of keeping the final charge price down too.
What I hate is buying a small computer part for only a dollar or two, but yet shipping is $12-15. I think that way people are less likely to request a refund, since they will probably only refund the actual price and not the price after shipping.
I don't think there is a way to crack down on this...

Sometimes the costs can be justified, because their shipping costs also include handling costs.
This means that not only is there postage, the sender sometimes has to purchase boxes/envelopes/packing foam/bubble wrap as well.
I've bought so much stuff recently that I have a big re-usable supply of all those items above, but people who sell a lot and don't buy much might not have that luxury.

Word on that. Ebay sellers rely on shipping to offset Ebay's fees, which just means thatbuyers will have to pay for it.crithit5000 wrote: I thought was like 90% of eBay sellers' M.O., sell for a great or decent price then RAPE THEM WITH THE SHIPPING. Sure there is Greg, just simply don't buy stuff from shipping price gougers.
Re: I feel that I have been ripped off.
Simply confirm the shipping charge before buying at all times. Then compare it to the costs on the relevant mail company website. If you don't like it and the seller doesn't want to change try another one.Specineff wrote:I won this.

This thing they call "handling" might in some cases be justified (packing material, travelling to post office, &c) if the amount is kept reasonable. From my experience however I know it is just a word in most cases. For one thing packing material is not expensive (especially when you are buying in bulk or recycle) and the other excuses they come up with are lame at best. Sometimes the sellers charging the handling use awful packaging (they really don't care).iatneH wrote:Sometimes the costs can be justified, because their shipping costs also include handling costs.

On the other hand there are also plenty of sellers only charging the exact postage and they are no small sellers on eBay. Some really provide great service; they are the real good and fair sellers.
I've fought these costs on more than one occasion and have received money back. This is a course I really can recommend as a last resort (should you not have been able to confirm anything beforehand or something goes wrong). Just ask them to explain where all the money goes.

Agreed. That's why I put the little line on my auctions specifying that what they get quoted by the post office is what they pay, and nothing else.
I just made some calculations, and a refurbished one comes down to 107 with tax at Lamestop. My total is 111, so I guess I'm getting a memory card and an extra controller for four bucks. Not bad... but that jerk is not getting any feedback from me.

Why not give him a neutral to warn other people (when you receive the item and it is OK)? Afraid he might retaliate?Specineff wrote:Agreed. That's why I put the little line on my auctions specifying that what they get quoted by the post office is what they pay, and nothing else.

Should he do this just reply to his bad feedback with explanation.

Retaliation leads to fear. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to destruction of perfect feedback, yes.
OR, I can wait until 89 days after the transaction, leave feedback within a couple of minutes before the deadline, and leave the neutral. And laugh all the way to the bank. (he won't be able to leave feedback after that, nyuk nyuk.)

Err, that doesn't work. I've tried it. They still get over a month to respond to your feedback. My seller didn't retaliate as he did against some others who gave him negs, which was actually lucky for him. He scammed a bunch of people a month later and got kicked out from Ebay.Specineff wrote: OR, I can wait until 89 days after the transaction, leave feedback within a couple of minutes before the deadline, and leave the neutral. They really need some way to prevent against retaliatory feedback. The "other people will only see the general trend and not 1 or 2 negs" thing is true but it's extremely annoying for honest folk.
That I can go pick it up by walking if I wanted, but he's refusing. And 15 dollars shipping is too much for 10 miles within the city of Phoenix. Excuses like "I don't like to see people often" don't just cut it. If he said, "look, I need to make up for the fees they're going to charge me", it won't be much a problem because he's being honest.

Well, Spec - i really don't mean to insult your home with this comment but... what else could you expect from a fellow Phoenician? Generally people here aren't exactly... whats the word for it? Oh, yeah - nice.
These are the same people that throw there trash into a potted tree sitting next to a trash can, y'know. Ridiculous. It's not all of them, i know - but the vast majority of people here are just downright rude and self-absorbed.
You know i don't drive a car anymore just because people kept slashing my tires and stealing my cd players? Once i found my car covered in eggs - before i even knew ANYBODY here. And it wasn't even near homecoming or halloween.
I also got hit by a flying 32oz soda just for walking down the sidewalk once near Dunlap and Black Canyon. Just for no reason - someone just decided to throw a soda at me from the safety of their passing vehicle.

Agreed. But it's not like I won't know where the package came from. Or we could simply meet in the corner of where he lives, and close the deal. Also he preferred to do a PP transfer and wait for it to post to his bank account rather than me giving him the cold hard cash in his hand. *shrugs*beatifik wrote:i don't know about you, but i have a problem with strangers from ebay showing up at my doorstep. god knows who's buying my stuff.Specineff wrote:That I can go pick it up by walking if I wanted, but he's refusing. @Circuitface. Sorry to hear about that kind of people doing that stuff to you and your car, man. You're right. There's a lot of scum here in Phoenix. And most of them ride the Red line bus at night. Good thing Route 44 also takes me home, heh.

Handling? Doesn't that just mean putting the object in a box with some bubble wrap? Let's say it takes you half an hour to do that (which is being extremely generous considering you could do it in 5 minutes). If you charge $10 shipping for half an hour of work, that means that you think you deserve $20 an hour as a box packer. Whoa.iatneH wrote:Sometimes the costs can be justified, because their shipping costs also include handling costs.
As someone else already basically stated - that's how they make the sales. People see an object for dirt cheap and say "Holy shit!" and buy it, not really paying attention to shipping, or they think "Yeah, shipping is pricey, but the item is cheap." and end up making what actually isn't a very good deal at all.
Thank God I live in Europe.circuitface wrote:Well, Spec - i really don't mean to insult your home with this comment but... what else could you expect from a fellow Phoenician? Generally people here aren't exactly... whats the word for it? Oh, yeah - nice.

I was going to suggest something like that...why not meet up at a mutual place...like a store/restuarant, or something?
Circuit :
All that shit, and you live in Scottsdale? From what I remember thats a pretty "upitty" type section.
BTW: People can and will do that type of stuff anywhere you live. Thats human nature, and most humans are not worth the price of toilet paper they wipe their asses with!
Nah, that all happened when i lived in Phoenix and Glendale. Though i did get attacked by a junkie in Scottsdale. He was on a skateboard and barked at me as he passed - right before he fell off the curb. I laughed at him so he got up, ran over, punched me, and ran away. His eyes were all bloodshot and you could tell he was all fucked up on something...

its funny because this exact thing happened to me, except i left positive feedback with negative comments included. this was the major event that caused him to post negative feedback for me, and a few "harassment e-mails" on the side.Samudra wrote:Why not give him a neutral to warn other people (when you receive the item and it is OK)? incidentally, don't buy anything from onesource777. thanks.
and man i haven't used ebay since march (not really anyway... thanks SuperLaydock and Mannerbot) and i don't miss it one inch. you guys are the best

I have no sig whatsoever.
GaH! This jerk sent me two controllers all right.. two PS1 dual shocks. What a piece of %$#@! this guy must be. That's it. I'm leaving neutral feedback with negative comments on the 89th day after the transaction. That'll teach him to not rip people off on shipping.
Still, I got an original memory card with it. Not bad considering 107 would buy me a core refurb system, and I paid 111 for the whole enchilada.
But still... this kind of people make me sick.
