Does the PSP output a 720x480 or a 854x480 picture?
So I know that the PSP never outputs games in a full screen picture, but a widescreen-ish picture surrounded by black bars on all sides and that is no matter if you output on a 16:9 screen or a 4:3 screen (I tested it).
But I was wondering something, do we know that when choosing the 16:9 option to output on a widescreen display does the PSP then output a 854x480 picture or does it it output a 720x480 picture stretched to 16:9?
The PS TV can output PSP games in full screen, but PSP games on the PS TV are emulated (as confirmed by Sony system software update 3.36 that made mention twice of the "PSP emulator") and look awful, a PSP game run at 480p on the PS TV look extremely pixelized and aliazed compared to how they look on the PSP Go at 480p, it even makes the beautiful CG cutscenes of The 3rd Birthday look awful at that no matter if you set it at 480p, 720p or 1080i (and I noticed that in 1080i Vita games colors are all washed out for some reason).

thisoutput a 720x480 picture stretched to 16:9
PSP Go + XRGB-3 or Framemeister is the best solution.

This is what I was suspecting, thank you for the confirmation.Fudoh wrote:thisoutput a 720x480 picture stretched to 16:9

I use the Themescene Optoma HD3000 that I got back in 2013 (Component IN to HDMI OUT), but was just wondering if the picture was not as good as it could be due to being 720x480 stretched to 16:9 (kinda similar case to Wii widescreen games such as Donkey Kong Country Returns or The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword since they are basically a widescreen picture fitted in a 4:3 720x480 output, exactly like how a modern US TV show released on DVD would work, a widescreen picture fitted in the DVD 720x480 standard).Fudoh wrote:PSP Go + XRGB-3 or Framemeister is the best solution.

720x480 is D1/D2 standard and can be used for 4:3 and 16:9. It's called anamorphic widescreen when used for 16:9 images.
Since the pixel count stays the same, picture quality for games running in 4:3 is of course far superior to games running in 16:9.
The PSP's base resolution is too small for give good results on home cinema processors like the Optoma. Quality on the XRGB-3 and Framemeister which have special scaling modes just for PSP looks awesome in comparison. XRGB on top 3, Framemeister at the bottom:

Yes you mentioned this to me back in 2013 or 2014, this is why now I play Wii games in 4:3 instead of doing what I did before playing on 16:9, the difference is that a few games "widescreen-only" games such as Resident Evil 4, Arc Rise Fantasia, Zak and Wiki, Donkey Kong Country Returns and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword are all anamorphic widescreen when in 4:3 (black bars on all sides), so they wont display in fullscreen on a 4:3 output, unlike on a 16:9 output which goes fullscreen (it basically takes the widescreen picture only and stretches it all the way to fill the screen, minimizing the black bars to a bare minimum that its barely notioceable, however the quality is basically degraded when going 16:9 fullscreen.), Metroid: Other M is another case, its not fullscreen when in 4:3 mode either, but it uses a different underscan layout scheme than the other games mentioned and only has black bars on two sides (the aspect ratio look more cinematographic, like a movie).Fudoh wrote:720x480 is D1/D2 standard and can be used for 4:3 and 16:9. Oh that explains a few things (like certain games similar to Let Us Cling Together or The Legend of Heroes Trilogy not looking so hot).Fudoh wrote:The PSP's base resolution is too small for give good results on home cinema processors like the Optoma.
They both look good but different, the XRGB3 seem to be easier to look at but is a tiny bit blurrier (sharpening filter?) and the colors are a little bit different too, you can make more details in the background of the XRGB3 picture.Fudoh wrote:Quality on the XRGB-3 and Framemeister which have special scaling modes just for PSP looks awesome in comparison. Both screenshots are taken from FULLSCREEN 1080p renderings, so yes, of course. The first XRGB3 picture looks alot better than the framemeister one. Is there any way to increase the PSP viewing in-game screen to full screen (beside using a PS TV which is just emulation anyways)?
In reality the difference between the two isn't this big. The reason why the XRGB-3 looks better is because the FM is weak when scaling 480p component signals. But the picture on the FM is quite a bit tweakable, while the XRGB-3 hardly gives you options.

Oh wow didnt know that, do you achieve this just with an XRGB3 or you use something elese? This seems a better option than using the Optoma or the PS TV. Are these pictures from an LCD or Plasma?Fudoh wrote:Both screenshots are taken from FULLSCREEN 1080p renderings, so yes, of course.
Can the PSP Go output RGBs and/or RGsB? (I see some third parties selling these, officially its only component, composite or D-Terminal.)Fudoh wrote:In reality the difference between the two isn't this big. Also don't forget that certain Sony TVs have a special scaling option for PSP games. It looks decent, but I still prefer how sharp they look on the PS Vita. I was actually hyped for the PS TV to get a digital output for PSP games but it became a massive disappointment.

Oh really? I didnt know that, which models please? I am not so surprised though, I know that Sony has exclusive features for their consoles when used with their TVs, such as this for example:blizzz wrote:Also don't forget that certain Sony TVs have a special scaling option for PSP games.

I only have a PS TV, I use my PSP Go with a SIXAXIS Controller. How was the PS TV a massive disappontment to you? For me is that PSP games are emulated and look awful no matter the resolution and PS Vita games themselves dont look so hot either, at least they look decent in 720p, though the colors are a little offish in alot of games. I am guessing its because these games where made with OLED in mind and since I use an LCD the colors are a little dull or faded, Soul Sacrifice Delta has an option for LCD screens and the game look alot better after that, Muramasa Rebirth also looks great, great colors, however other titles have dull colors for some reason, its worse when set to 1080i.blizzz wrote:It looks decent, but I still prefer how sharp they look on the PS Vita. nothing but a XRGB-3. That's my Sony LCD. On the XRGB the option is called D2 zoom (D2 as in 480p). It was made especially for the PSP.Oh wow didnt know that, do you achieve this just with an XRGB3 or you use something elese? This seems a better option than using the Optoma or the PS TV. how these cables work is beyond me. Maybe an integrated transcoder chip ? Or not at all ? All PSPs just have composite video and component. Can the PSP Go output RGBs and/or RGsB? (I see some third parties selling these, officially its only component, composite or D-Terminal.)

I don't know. The Screen Format setting is called "Portable Game 1" on my Sony KDL-40EX650 from 2012.Lawfer wrote:Oh really? I didnt know that, which models please?

Some of the 2013/2014 TVs have the special PSP modes as well.
