Damaging CRTs by TATEing?
It seems like rotating a crt (let's say a 20" crt) every week or so could cause damage. Thoughts?

It depends on the build quality of the set more than anything.

The biggest I've turned on its side yet was 19'' and no damage was done. Not every week, but I'd often kept it like that for days, browsing web, reading scanlations and such. Of course every CRT should be turned off whenever you change its position.

It's a 20" Sony Wega.Einzelherz wrote:It depends on the build quality of the set more than anything.

I've heard of possible damage to these by rotating. Something about it having an aperture that's not a standard mask (grill?)
That being said, I have rotated my 20" wega a few times with no problems. (But do at your own risk)

This is a good argument against it, even if it's anecdotal. I mean, people rotate their BVMs and PVMS as well, but they almost seem intended for it. Maybe. On the other hand, they can be had for ~$10 here so would it really kill you if it did die? I dunno.antron wrote:I've heard of possible damage to these by rotating. I've TATEd my old Philips years ago and it doesn't seem to have affected it. Then again, I'm not sure I'd be able to tell if it had.

I think we'd see more reports of CRT's dying on this forum if tate was actually bad for them.

I have never heard of any issues with putting those in portrait/tate that would be related to Trinitron technology.
The fragile casing though, with its often bothersome shape, could be an issue. So just be gentle and make sure not to hit/drop it.
Personally I did it with several 21" and 27", I believe over the years many people did and never met any particular issues.

Another thing that might cause damage while tateing is heat. Grills in CRT cases are designed for horizontal use.

I recall seeing somebody mentioning it happening, actually, at least once.BazookaBen wrote:I think we'd see more reports of CRT's dying on this forum if tate was actually bad for them.
The main thing to keep in mind is that any display - even LCD sets - is going to work best if you just leave it be and don't constantly move it. If possible I'd set up a set to tate and leave it there.

Considering how many arcade games were verticle, it must be safe for standard shadow mask CRTs. If its unsafe for ones with grills, does that mean they were never used in vertical arcade cabinets?

I don't think there's anything problematic about the tubes themselves, but rather just the stresses of moving on the other parts and how they are supported. Of course it's also good to keep at least one vent unobstructed!

Usually fine, just do it with some care and having the unit off and left for approx 10 mins - essentially this is to ensure the set is deguassed ... 10 mins probably overkill but good to avoid disappointment or possible impression that crt won't tate.
Consumer tvs often have weaker sides and most will flex some since they weren't really designed to go on their side. However never had this cause a problem on any sony I've tated... I got to image most tv's would be able to withstand it physically due to shipping/trucking/general quality control. Similarly you might want to beware ventilation/heat but again nothing to really worry about so long as you don't block every vent/flow around your tv.
Most pvms or similar have far more rigid casings and were designed for stacking, wierd orientations and nutty work environments so these should be perfectly fine.

And most CRT's have metal frames on the inside even though they're plastic on the outside. So in my experience they've been pretty sturdy.

Some chassis don't like being on their sides - poorly held in, heavy components. Actually in some older machines the chassis weren't actually bolted to the frame, they were separate on a shelf on vertical games. Very old machines.
