Some XRGB/Micomsoft questions

Post by FamiDriveDuo »

I got my hands on a VGA monitor (Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 91txm) and was wondering how well the various Micomsoft boxes like the XRGB series handled on them among other old VGA monitors? I've got a PS2 & OG Xbox, how well would they handle? Is there any advantage to the older units or something like the Xselect-D4? Will light guns work? How well can they handle 480i component? What kind of cables would I need for PS2 & Xbox? Where would I go about picking any of them up?

In general the XRGBs play very well on CRTs - that's what they were made for. The 2plus is the least recommend model since it's output tends to be a littles less stable than the video output on the other models.

Original XBox: almost all titles output in native 480p, so there's no need for a linedoubler.

The XSelect is a transcoder unit and no substitute to the XRGBs.

Lights guns onthe Dreamcast will work on 31khz CRTs. PS2 lightguns won't work.

The XRGB's do a fast and solid 480i to 480p conversion, but they only use a field at a time, so you essentially only get half resolution. Other linedoublers (even cheap ones like an iScan Pro or Ultra) will do a better (but also very different kind of deinterlacing).

For your XBox you need a transcoder unit (Audio Authority and such). Component in, VGA out.
For your PS2 you can use a XRGB, but depending on your types of games, you might want to try another linedoubler. Here's a good offer: http://www.ebay.com/itm/111638039899 - - also component in, VGA out.

Any specific model number on Audio Authority?

Where can I read a review on that DVDO iScan Ultra MM504B? Is it good for 240p content & PS2 & Xbox games that run in 480i?

which ever one you can find. In general component to VGA is much easier to find than the other way around.

on my page http://retrogaming.hazard-city.de/ . It's nice for 240p and it has proper 480i deinterlacing compared to the XRGB. But as said, there are hardly any relevant 480i-only XBox games.
