Which front loader NES board revision is most desirable?

Post by austin532 »

Just curious, which front loader NES motherboard is the most desirable? There are several revisions and I'm wondering if the NES had the same fate as the SNES where the later models had the sharpest picture. Supposedly the test market models (N0100000 or less) had a softer picture while later models have trouble with unlicensed games. Here are the revisions:

* NES-CPU-04 ©1986
* NES-CPU-05 ©1986
* NES-CPU-06 ©1987
* NES-CPU-07 ©1987
* NES-CPU-08 ©1989
* NES-CPU-09 ©1987
* NES-CPU-10 ©1987
* NES-CPU-11 ©1987

Also, if a NES is RGB modded using the RGB Board does it really matter which revision it is or if one version is sharper than the other?

Honestly at this point, none of them really matter.

Because with NESRGB you don't use onboard video or audio amp. You just need cpu and PPU as slave.

When RGB modding the revision wont matter anymore. Under the old RGB mod method it did but now that the NESRGB is around it won't, just grab any old NES.

As for stock I have not noticed any visible differences between them when playing games.

It doesnt matter with the nesrgb board. they all look good.

With the playchoice mod though the worst revision i had was the nes-cpu-11.

when i got my first nesrgb the first thing i did was install it into the same nes-cpu-11 and all of its problems went away.

thats also the only nes ive built that has a scart port on the back of it. the scart port is great though because all i need is a cheap scart to scart instead of an expensive specially made console cable and it works fine.

But cutting that square hole for it isnt my idea of fun.

I much prefer round connectors.

I'm still curious as to what version is/or was the best using stock composite. I have a NES-CPU-10 1987 and honestly the picture looks the same as any other NES. After 7 years of doing video game retail I know I've seen some NES systems that are better looking than others but whether or not it has to do with board or the components going bad is beyond me.

mvsfan, what problems did you have with the CPU-11? I'm want to know because I hear the 10's and 11's have issues.

Also can someone explain why CPU-09, 10, and 11 were released in 1987 and CPU-08 was released in 1989? That makes no sense.

with the playchoice mod and the nes cpu 11 it had lots of jb and some interference. Moreso than the other revisions. Also depending which chip you used you would get glitches in the edges of the screen.

that mess is gone with the nesrgb.

I am not sure wich nes revision looks the best on composite because to me they all look crappy. I cant stand the massive dot crawl the nes has.
