Japanese PS2 Reccomendations

Other than cave shmups(mushi is at the top of my list) and rpgs/racing games/sports games/katamari and stuff...

Bareing in mind I dont understand japanese... Just wanna hear about what you're playing an liking

Simple 2000 Series Vol. 81: The Terra Defence Force 2

Another fantastic game from Sandlot, the makers of RAD, Remote Control Dandy SF and The Chikyuu Boueigun. Terra Defence Force 2 is a sequel to The Chikyuu Boueigun. Both games are budget releases in the Simple 2000 series by D3 publishing but don't let that fool you these games are excellent.

You're basically dropped into an old school japanese monster movie and you must protect the world from an invasion of giant ants and various other monsters. It's an over the shoulder 3rd person action game and it's a ton of fun. The frame rate can drop a bit low in spots but it's a minor annoyance. The missions are fairly obvious so you don't really need to know Japanese to enjoy the title.

I've heard Sandlot is developing a game for the 360. I can't wait to see what these guys can do on that hardware.

I quite like Simple 2000: The Splatter Action. It's a neat little beat 'em up with nifty (albeit simple) graphics and cool art design. Pacrappa turned me onto this one a few months ago. Good stuff.

Also, I really dig the PS2 Macross game. It plays very similarly to Robotech: Battlecry, but minus the cel shading.

if you are a fan of style, i second splatter action. can't say i enjoy the game for its "gameness" though.

look at these screens and concepts and tell me the art design isn't amazing you liar

I fuckin loved that game

I figured out a long combo that made all the bosses relativly easy, this combo hasnt been in any guide I've seen either hehehe.

edit: I think I seen a review of that simple 2000 vol81 in either games or edge magazine. They liked it, think I probably would too

Same style of play with some tweaks such as experience gains and upgrading your weapons/combos. Awesome, awesome game.

Um, what's so terrible? As long as you expect nothing more than from the original Valken, the game is just fine really.

Berserk PS2 is a completely different game than the DC one, it's a lot better too IMO.

Recommended JP PS2 games:

Chain Dive - Like Bionic Commando meets Shinobi.
Metal Slug 3 - If you don't have an Xbox.
Hudson Remakes - Star Soldier, Bonk, Adventure Island
Taito Legends
Ys Remakes - If you like the originals
Macross Super Dimenion Fortress
OZ - Haven't played this yet myself, but I hear it's great.

I would never expect anything more than the original Valken. It's brilliant.

Unfortunately, this conversion isn't half the game the original was. As I said, my main problem here is the soundtrack. It won't bother those who haven't played the original, but these are some really awful versions of classic pieces of music that were quite importantly tied to the overall experience, I reckon. I'll upload it somewhere if you chaps want to hear it.

Aside from that, "graphics whores" may be disappointed to know that the graphics are rather nastily filtered in this version!

can someone post some more detailed impressions on Chain Dive. it looked really interesting, but everything i've heard has been really mixed, and it is still too expensive for a "why the hell not" kind of buy.

This beat em up, called Simple 2000: The Splatter Action, sounds interesting. But I have a question, is it another mediocre 3D style beat em up ala Fighting Force or does it play like a classic side scrolling beat em up ala Bare Knuckle and Final Fight?

personally i don't find the game all that exciting, gameplay-wise. but i bought it for the art direction to begin with. i haven't played it in a while, but there is some basic fighting to be had, some platforming (and not very good platforming at that), a shop element (for health and so on), and a simple combo system for when the chainsaws come out (called a Smash bonus i think).

in all though, i think it was a fun little romp to see the sights, but there wasn't anything there that kept me interested.

Thanks for the description captain ahar, however, one question still remains. Does it have 3D gameplay or is it 2D (and hopefully sprite based) gameplay?

its got 3d graphics, and has 2d gameplay. in the same way that most classic brawlers have it. meaning you have depth of movement but left to right, and a limited up and down. i believe though that attacks can be aimed in all directions (again its been probably a year since its been played).
