PVM + FedEx = Shit

Post by mgy1523 »

Just got my PVM-1351q into today and this is what the low life's that work at FedEx managed to do...

Image

I have actually made up a PCB layout for all the components in which I'll salvage from the thrashed C board (neck board), just need to order it and wait for it to get here. I don't think anyone has done this yet but I'll definitely post pictures when I get the board and after I have it all soldered.

Also, I talked to guy ordered this from, I'm already getting another PVM for $19.99 and he's cutting me in on some more PVMs. So Saturday I'm going to Pittsburgh and getting some PVM's! Eat shit FedEx!

It's not just FedEx, today's mainstream carriers can't handle crt's properly period.

(they even break tons of lcd's, so...)

As someone suggested recently: stop shipping those.

Good deal on the custom layout! Hopefully that could help somebody else down the line too.

Damn, looks exactly as the one I received last summer. C board busted :( I sure wish there were more PVM/BVM units circulating here in Sweden. Last one I got was shipped all the way from Cali. I've been thinking about trying to do the same as you so I'll be checking in on your progress. Best of luck, mate!

For shipping try to buy from former AV rental places, be on the lookout for units that are sold with fligh cases.

Most definitely because after I get this board, maybe I can help with yours. I actually saw yours and though to myself. "Wow, they're even almost broken in the same places".

That would be much appreciated and yes, my thought exactly.

I imagine the box had extensive damage or it looked fine and the monitor was busted inside?.

Well, don't ship bass drums either... Especially if they're one-of-a-kind:

I'm really tired of the shit job these assholes pull. What a bunch of bullshit. I honestly paid more money for the shipping than I did for the unit. I basically paid these shit heads to break my shit. I really hope bad things happen to this scum bags.

Was the neck ok? Looks like the board took quite an impact.

I wish people would stop trying to ship these non-freight.

It will ruin it. There's no getting around it.

In my case the box was slightly beat up but not to the point that I would suspect any real damage to the contents. Also, the monitor was wrapped in numerous layers of bubble wrap. Still eludes me how they managed to break it. Or maybe it doesn't

Let me state again how I do not understand how these neckboards keep breaking. They seem not to be attached to anything but the end of the tube, which itself, I assume, is pretty solidly attached to the chassis.

I cannot imagine that the neckboard has much occasion to move about inside the chassis, so what causes it break? The profile of the cracks seem like the sides of the board are somehow subjected to some force, though I cannot imagine how.

Parcels are handled with the heaviest part as the base - this way they don't topple over. If some dope puts a CRT monitor it in a cardboard box and sends it away with a parcel courier it will usually be carried around with the CRT facing down because all the weight in a monitor is in the front glass. When it gets dropped it will land on its face. The reason the neck board breaks is its quite large, fragile (made from paper phenolic, not fibreglass), and supported in only one position. If you looks at the other side of the neck board you'll notice it has heat sinks and cable assemblies attached to make up significant mass. And as you would expect, the shock of the CRT heat sink hitting the ground is transferred very effectively to the neck board due to the low compliance of the glass.

Apparently word still hasn't gotten round that CRTs need proper cushioning when shipped. I've had several shipped to me in boxes full of solid foam pellets, and none of them arrived DOA.

I've had no issues buying my JVC, BVM and PVM when shipping through fed ex. You can't just wrap them in bubble wrap and be good to go, you need styrofoam on all corners of the set. Haven't had an issue with any of them.

You're absolutely right. I used to work in a warehouse a long time ago and used to package up CRT's. Always used these foam inserts and that went around the sides and a little in front and back of the CRT so they would be elevated and not flush with the box. It was perfect and cheap as shit.

Anyways, check out the traces I fixed up. I really went into it on here since its electronics is how I spend my nights anyways...

That is a sad site. I'm surprised that my 20" PVM made it here in one piece . Shipped via Fedex as well.

Nice job on the rebuilding of the circuit. I wonder if insulated solid core wire for traces would have been a better choice? High voltage in those old CRTs

Yep, it depends on what kind of packaging filler materials one uses to ship such monitors to their final destination. The foam pellets do absorb the shocks and whatnot during the rigors of the shipping business indeed.

I had a brand new Sony 9" PVM monitor sent to me bubble wrapped back in 2004 and it survived the journey unscathed (but that was rather the exception) via the U.S. Postal Service.

Okay... It is my lucky day!!!

I just got 2 SONY 20 inch PVM's for $100. Not only that, I got myself an Olympus OEV143 for $19.99

And of course, I'm picking them up. The 2 Sony's are in Cleveland (I'm from Columbus, OH) and the rebranded Sony OEV is in Pittsburgh. OH HAPPY DAYS!!!

Congrats on the deal :D

Yeah, it's 2 for $100. It's at a hospital just a little up state from me. Like 2 hours away. But then I have to drive the next state over which is another 2 hours from there. Then to top it off, it's a 2 hour drive back home making it about 6-7 hours just on the road alone.

By the way, I did fix the traces to that board and now all I get is a thin line that goes across the middle of the screen horizontally. Wonder what else I need to do to fix it. I'm not giving up on that thing at all.

I forgot to add, they're PVM-20L2MD. How's that rate among PVM's? Seems like they have some added bonuses after browsing around reading about them. Of course, leading me back to here

They're both in pristine condition and comes with and endoscopy cabinet. I won't need the cabinet so that's whatever.

PVM 20L2 is a good set - main thing is that they are relatively recent, made within the last 10 years. Do yours come with bonus BKM-129X cards in the back?

In terms of resolving power, it does pretty well by the Xbox (640x480 framebuffer) though it could be a little bit sharper - TVL spec is 600 lines. Not great, but not a problem for 2D era consoles, and probably not an issue for most 480i games either.

In fact I got mine from Cleveland as well. gmsurplussales? Be really careful with the front glass on the tubes though - one of mine ended up with a small nick in the screen (not in the worst spot, but it's still there) and I think that happened when it was being taken to my car. If you have to carry them, carry 'em tube outwards if there's any chance of zippers / buttons catching...

Yeah, both do have the BKM-129X expansions. What exactly does that improve upon? Just add component?

By the way, this is the image I get on the Sony PVM-1351Q

Image

Wonder what else I'missong here. It has to be that C board. Possibly just a missed trace or maybe a bad component? Still trying here.

Also, that line in person is thin and not bulky like in the picture. It displays what's on the screen but with just 1 horizontal line.

Vertical collapse.

Double check for a short, or bad joint on the neck board. If it was banged around that much, could also be a cracked joint on the deflection board.
