Aces Of The Luftwaffe / PS4

Post by system11 »

So, Aces Of The Luftwaffe just came out on PS4.

It's a mobile port, game is basically a vertical shooter turned on its side, but there's currently no way to rotate it.

The graphics are pretty decent in fact, they need to put some work into the gameplay though, flaws include hitbox size, ship speed (ridiculously twitchy even at lowest speed) and a hangover from mobileness where fire is fully automated. Since it's a progression based game there's no score, and they've forgotten to put a 'start over' option in anywhere so don't buy those speed upgrades unless you want to delete your save.

Feels like it could have been a reasonably fun distraction with a bit more effort before release. Perhaps they'll patch it.

Wow, I was kind of excited about a new STG on PS4 until I read your description...and then watched the trailer.

I can only guess that the fast ship speed is due to the fact that the game was originally designed with the assumption that you could zip around as fast as you wanted to to avoid stuff, since it used touch controls. Might have been the only way they could make it actually playable with a controller, but I'm guessing they didn't include a speed change button or anything like that.

Without even including a score counter, this certainly seems like it's not really meant for us. Oh well.

EDIT: I like how the trailer has an on-screen "push" button for the super weapon, and the iOS app store icon still in it.

Yeah, thing is when the game gets going it's actually not bad at all - bullets everywhere and it never drops a frame. It's just designed for mobile and they didn't think about how to adapt it for more traditional play.

Reading the Youtube comments on this (and practically every other video) really make me lose a bit of faith in my humanity

Stumbled upon this late one night this week and gave it a crack for £3.99.

Oh dear. There's a seed of a good little game in there, and with some tweaking it could be a system gem, but everything System 11 said; no score (!), lazy-zontal porting to hori, awfully out of step vehicle speed, an insane hotbox and a general lack of options to start over...

Surely with a little effort the team could have delivered a jolly good port? Instead it's a bit of a let down. I feel bad saying that, because it's clear some effort and thought has gone in, but it's like it was suddenly all cut short and the game was thrown out to release.

I guess with the hori-verti-zontal, it shouldn't matter. Why do horis have to be side on? Perhaps because top-down nori feels damn odd!

Aside from the ridiculous speed of the ship (do not upgrade) , I find this game quite fun, and like the metal slug style graphics..

ninety forty poo: the battle of loo
i tried it on a toilet, it's fun to destroy endless popcorn waves in arcade 1943, but this has a lot less action on screen due to huge sprites and bullet sponge popcorn planes. i'll still play it though becouse it's free and windows phone has no games.

Watching the video... it's just so odd. My head keeps slowly rotating over to the right, to match the angle of the trees.
Making an action platformer with a transforming grappling hook: ChainStaff. Also made a shmup with multi-ships: Shoot 1UP DX, and more .
