PS1 games output 240p over component via PSP

Post by BONKERS »

I don't know if any of you knew this before.

But using the PSPGO(or 3000 probably) with component cables and it set to 4:3 and interlaced on a CRT, you CAN get 240p output for PS1 games!

They seem to look every bit as good as on the real thing aside from this 1px wide or so line of garbage on the right hand side here and there. (Seems to be with every game tested so far). Viewing the software manual will switch to 480i and once you go back in game it will swap back to 240p

I had wondered about this for a long time since there are many games on PSN that are expensive for physical copies.And/or rarer. (Like the Mega Man 1-6 PS1 versions!) I really didn't like playing in 480i on PS3 and playing on an LCD just doesn't look all that great to me. So I finally tried my luck and bought a cradle+component cables. Using a PS3 controller works wonderful as well. There isn't any noticeable latency for me (Probably at least 1/2 a frame from BT)whatsoever.

I'd take some pictures. But my camera is dead ATM and i'm lazy, need to charge it.

I didn't know if this was widely known information and is probably the single best use of the PSP Video Out IMO

It looks very close to a real PSX I agree. A vastly better option than using a PS3. When I tried it last time the colors seemed just a tiny bit more muted compared to RGB from a PSX, dunno if that's due to the signal itself or due to certain settings on my PVM.

I believe this also works on the 2000 btw.

Since you mentioned those Rockman Complete Works ports, don't these actually run in 480i even on a real console?

no, proper 240p, but they're a bit laggy.

Very interesting. I have an old 2000 somewhere collecting dust--and the component cables. Might be worth a test.

Is there a version of the 240p test suite for PSP? I never did mod it in any way (hence the dust). I'm guessing I'd need to mod it to be able to load and play PS1 games? Any guides to be recommended?

No there isn't one AFIK. If they ported it to the playstation. One could run it as an eboot off the PSP with CFW.

But, like I mentioned it's pretty easy to see that it's in 240p and not 480i. >_> Still need to charge my camera. I'll go do that now

You might be thinking of the PS2 MMAC that runs in 480i. (Which sucks)

It's 240p, but I'm thinking it's slightly off-spec as I could never get it to run perfectly on a XRGB-mini. Definitely 240p though.
