Fuck, I hope not. As someone that has been playing for so long, it's sad to see the old developers and publishers dropping away one by one... these are two of the only names that have been there from day one and to see them merge... :(

Christ, I still remember the Spectrum Ghosts n Goblins loading screen that was copyrighted 'Japan Capsule Computers'...

Sorry, caught me in a miserable 'those were the days' type of mood today, I'm sure all us older gamers have them?

For me, this article shows how much in deep shit the industry is now.

Back at the days, Andrew Braybrook, Archer MacLean, David Braben, all managed to make games by themselves, probably coding in their garages or something... Ok, David Braben took 5 bloody years to make Frontier and still it was full of bugs, but Mr. Braybrook made some of the greatest gems in the 8 bits era, and still made some classics in the 16 bits era.

Sensible Software made some of the greatest games ever when they didn't had more than 6 people on their staff. (If it was that all...)

Even on the Playstation... it may not be the greatest game of all time, but if I remember correctly, X2 was basically made by Andreas Tadic (Coding), Rico Holmes (Graphics) and the musician (Who I cant remember if it was Allister Brimble or Bjorn Lynne). And this game is considered by many as the PSX shmup with the best GFX. (Its also, AFAIK, the last game made by the duo Tadic/Holmes, which is a sad farewell as they made some great games back in the Amiga times). The game had a cool intro, great music, great GFX... all that a "modern" game has, and I doubt it was a big budget game.

And isn't Cave very small too?

And don't even get me started about Manfred Trenz.

Now the BIG companies need to merge to try to survive, they cant survive by their own anymore... HOW THE HELL making a game became SO expansive ?

FMV, Tessellation, Mip Mapping, gouraud shading, voice acting, FSAA, bump mapping.. all those bells and whistles cost money. At the expense of gameplay.

Well, if they do merge... maybe one day they'll come out with thier own console? You gotta admit that would be cool.

This is nothing but pure speculation at this point.

I have always thought of Capcom as an orange, and Konami an apple. You just can't mix and/or compare them.

It's not a bad thing if the creative and distribution sides are kept separate. What negative has come of the Square and Enix merger, unless you think getting Enix games in the US is a bad thing? It's like carpooling to work, why drive two cars when you can save money by driving one.

What would the name of the new merged company be called?

Konamicom? Capomani? CapKon? Captain Komani Commando?

Give it a couple of years and you can just call it "EA".

I thought you of all people should know that both Capcom and Konami already have much experience with arcade hardware. Maybe a console isn't too farfetched? :] Too bad that arcade games aren't too popular outside of...well...arcades. Sega and SNK tried putting arcade systems in homes, but they're no match for home consoles which play games other than ones you'll find in arcades...

It doesn't sound like THAT bad of an idea. How about we just wait until if they DO merge?

Besides, Konami vs Capcom would make a badass fighter.
The radio said, "No, John. You are the demons."
And then, John was a zombie.

It could, but Konami isn't really known for fighters. And Vic Viper has gotta make it into that game somehow....maybe as a helper buddy?

Its about market share as well, not just cost of making games.

The big money makers are obviously EA, Square etc.. And they are alot bigger. All these companies could decide to just make cheaper games, so its their choice to join the nextgen bandwagon and merge.

If the consumer just doesn't buy into the nextgen, things would stay the way they are now. I just don't see any reason to jump to nextgen at this point. Its totally ridiculous.

I have actually given up gaming as a whole, because its like the universe, a never ending infinite grasp to see further, but nothing better.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Maybe they could merge with SNK, too. We'd have SCANKA.
