Hori Compact Joystick (PSX) Modding

Post by iast »

Was wondering if anyone had experience with modding a PS1-era Hori Compact Joystick (pic is not mine), assuming such a thing is possible.

It's actually not all that bad a stick in stock form, considering how old it is. At the very least, would anyone know if a modern Sanwa balltop would fit on this? The stock one really doesn't stay screwed in all that well to the point that I can feel it come loose with like 5 minutes of play.

Balltop should be a simple swap, but the problem is not the balltop itself. If you want to tighten it properly, you need to get at the bottom of the joystick shaft which should have a groove in it. Hold the shaft from rotating with a screwdriver then tighten the balltop.

There's no way any standard arcade parts will fit in that thing. Best you could hope for would be to maybe replace the microswitches and clean and lubricate the pivot and restrictor.

I'd be curious to see a teardown of the joystick itself, but it looks like pretty standard Hori stuff.

LEDs would look badass in a transparent case, but I can't remember if PS1/2 supplies any voltage to the controller?

The first version of the Dual-Shock rumble controllers were on the PS1, plus the Playstation controllers (like most controllers) encode the controller state and send it to the console serially - so yes, there's voltage to drive that kind of stuff.
