So, I've got myself another old Xbox with another Samsung DVD drive in it - made sure to put it back together this time - and everything seems alright, except that the tray won't eject still. That's pretty significant.
After following the service procedure again (Watcher's Youtube video) I decided to turn the console on with the drive out of its metal cover to see what was happening. What I see is the tray motor doesn't spin at all. In this device, the motor is connected via a small rubber band to some gears, and these work to actually open the tray. The actual laser assembly seems to work fine - red light (I saw it from the side by accident, trying not to do that) and it moved, so that's alright. I even swapped out my 80-wire IDE for the original 40-pin from the Xbox (which turns out to be a better fit).
I might try a swap from the other drive if the parts fit - or maybe even swap drives altogether if I can reassemble the other one - but what I'm interested in is knowing whether I could test whether the motor's working with a multimeter. Any ideas?
