Phoenix Force: the shmup of only 100 boss battles on Steam

Post by SergioAlonso »

I'll present you my game that is available on Steam:

Image

Phoenix Force is a shoot ‘em up game based on the classics, but with a drastic change: the game cuts off the basic and weak enemies that populate most of the level and focuses on the battles against the most challenging and powerful enemies of the stage: THE BOSSES!

Is it locked to Steam DRM?
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Thanks, it does take a fair bit of courage to stand up for your rights when so many of your peers seem happy to not only toss them in the trash but chastise others for even caring.

I'd like to take a second to inform everyone that this game was initially posted in the dev. section, where this is how the developer responds to very good and constructive criticism (without addressing any of it):
SergioAlonso wrote:Hello Shmupers,

Thanks for the feedback, it's too sad that a few of you didn't enjoy our game with 500 000+ downloads, 44 000 reviews with average 4.80/5.00 star rating. :( I knew we couldn't make everyone happy since we started developing this game.
I'd also like to mention that this is a mouse-based game, and you can get something like Ikaruga or Crimzon Clover on steam for almost the same price.
Does not get my recommendation. For a mobile-game, the pricing is absolutely utopistic

If you pick up any book on game design, it's funny how they will basically tell you to never, ever, ever, respond to feedback like this.

Does this game revolutionize the genre? I don't play shmups that don't revolutionize the genre.

I think that being sold over Steam doesn't require that a game be locked to its DRM scheme.

If it's sold on steam it's tied to steam drm, only desura, gog, humble store, etc are drm free.

Also i don't know what's up with steam in this forum, yeah, it's drm, but it's the least intrusuve drm there is atm.

Oh, I remember this cocky asshole...

Everyone in the thread had valid complaints, and offered tips on what he can do to improve his game. These pointers were quickly discarded, as it was much more important for our hero to point out his +500,000 downloads!!!

That is incorrect. There are a number of games on Steam that do not have any kind of drm whatsoever, and can be launched without steam running, transferred to a computer without steam and launched, etc.

It's just the majority of Steam games that have drm.

Exactly. I've seen that many games that predate Steam's existence usually don't have DRM. In the case that they do have DRM, usually having the client go on offline mode is good enough though. It's not intrusive at all.

I'm nostalgic for the days when steam was just labeled as "that thing you get valve games on" and now it's basically "IT CAN'T BE RELEASED ON PC WITHOUT BEING ON STEAM ALSO. BUT WITH MORE FEATURES. AND ACHIEVEMENTS."

That aside, yes. I do recall this guy being poorly receptive to feedback.

are you sure you're not referring to humble bundle or free games? I never heard of any game that can be opened without steam online or offline.

I was able to open Satazius, Binding of Isaac(Original + Wrath of the Lamb as I don't own Rebirth), and VVVVVV without Steam open.

I only checked one of the Gundemonium Collection games and it needed Steam open(so I just assumed all 3 did), Bunny Must Die seems to need Steam(I could always go download it from Desura where I originally got it for DRM free as I got it on Steam via code once it was greenlit). I didn't check the Ys games (Origin and Felghana as I don't have the others on Steam). Cave Story + does require Steam, but I'd just say get the freeware version instead(I got it on Humble Bundle though and could download it from there for DRM free), and I didn't check the rest because I'd then have to reinstall everything.

The more you know!

Still, i don't really see the big deal about it being tied to steam if you can run all of them offline

I opened Steam games directly bought from Steam. Satazius, Exceed Series, Bleed, others I can't remember off the top of my head. etc. Mostly 2d arcade games (!!!) that no publisher actually cares for putting drm on.

A lot of games actually don't have DRM on Steam, Steam itself just doesn't tell you on the store page or anywhere else. The only way to find out is to try and launch them without Steam running.

Oh well, if another thread was going to go down the Steam DRM shitter, this one's a pretty good choice.

Took the OP long enough to make a topic up in here. I remember this group posting in the Dev forums about the Phoenix game and apparently not liking the feedback they received, judging by their waving download statistics in our faces.

The ironic part is that most everyone in their original thread had positive things to say about certain features in the game. It's not like they were unfairly bashed or something.
