You're screwed
You're screwed
You now have to pay for every single shmup you ever played illigally. This includes cracks, roms, stealing arcade tokens or whatever you did. You also have to pay the standard price for any shmup or shmup-related gear that you obtained for a smaller price.
How much are you paying? (for anything you did, use prices that were valid when you did it)
As for me, I'd say less than 200$, but close to it.

Re: You're screwed
Hmm...would you include shooters you first tried in MAME, etc. but bought afterwards (would ports count)? Would stuff you tried once and said "ugh, this is awful" and immediately deleted count? Would stuff you tried to play but couldn't make work properly count? Not that it matters since I could never begin to guess at how much money emulating has saved/cost me over the years, but I'll bug you anyways.

Re: You're screwed
Generally try to categorize games in mame to "played a few times" and "played shit outta", and make an approximate guess on how much it would cost you in the cheapest place they are available to you. Use a standard price you find somewhere if you never saw them in an actual arcade. Yes, ports count. Yes, any machinery that is in any way related to playing or owning a shmup counts (if you obtained it for a smaller price than the usual one). And yes, shooters you mame'd and bought later count. It would be like going to an arcade and then buying it.

I actually don't emulate stuff I don't own, purely because my collector nerdboner can't get sufficiently enraged if it aint somethin I got.

Ever since I started gaming in my adult life I've always preferred the real thing - meaning consoles with original media.
I only MAME to practice and to participate in stuff like STGT.
So my debt with the devil is something close to 2% ~ 5%.

Re: You're screwed
Would happily pay for old arcade ROMs if there was a method of doing so and the cash went to those who created it, or at least current rights holders who are still making halfway decent games.

Same here. Why won't anyone give this a try already? There is literally nothing but money to be made. Do they think people are going to pirate more if they do it or something?TransatlanticFoe wrote:Would happily pay for old arcade ROMs if there was a method of doing so and the cash went to those who created it, or at least current rights holders who are still making halfway decent games.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Re: You're screwed
I spent more $$ on my flash carts for NES, SNES, and MD than I've really gotten back in terms of "free" play. And my Turbo Everdrive experiment was a fail. Not to mention, the virus on my computer that I got from downloading "free" roms to test on my Everdrive cost me plenty of trouble. I'd say I'm safely in the black.
Re: You're screwed
I would have to buy a Garegga, Ibara, and DOJ pcb. A copy of DOJBLEX is on its way to my place so probably just the first two.

Downloaded so many games just to try once, like a demo, I couldn't count.
I think maybe 95% of the time I've spent playing in my life was on games I actually own (or used to), because I feel like spending my money on stuff I actually enjoy.

Re: You're screwed
At $60/70 a pop for retail ports [possibly significantly less for certain older games, a bit more for certain others], I'd need a few months to pay it off. Also, I'd need a J-360 and J-PS2. PS1 and Saturn stuff, I can run just fine.
the killer is the unported games, I'm too poor for some of these PCBs
and it's a good thing Radiant Silvergun has a port [that being said, the game has gotten fairly "cheap" compared to its historically high pricing]
although, I think it might actually be cheaper to get the ST-V cart, but then I'd need a ST-V to play it on
If I count me having gone to the arcade instead to play, I'm also pretty clear for some games [other than DOJBL and Dangun Feveron -- both games I haven't seen in an arcade, but I'd probably come out worse than getting the 360 port and possibly even worse than getting the board for Feveron -- this is at $0.50 a credit, which is standard fare where I've seen].
either way, there's a lot of money involved

Cost of plane tickets to Japan plus sum of all credits played would probably be less than getting 40 PCBs and hardware to play them here.Captain wrote:Generally try to categorize games in mame to "played a few times" and "played shit outta", and make an approximate guess on how much it would cost you in the cheapest place they are available to you.
