"Battle Beaster" (DC) - what is this game?

Post by Pretas »

Ran across this very obscure Dreamcast game from 2001, which was the first and only release of Studio Wonder Effect.

There is not a single video on Youtube or Niconico aside from the indistinct opening FMV, nor does it have a Japanese Wikipedia entry. Gamefaqs lists it under the Action genre, though the back of the box calls it some sort of "simulation." Apparently there was also a Battle Beaster 2 announced, which was canceled.

I managed to find a .cdi image warez release from over 5 years ago, though it's sure to be terribly unoptimized and I'm not going to subject my DC's laser to it. The only scrap of English information out there describes it as having similarities to Monster Farm/Monster Rancher and Pokemon, but says nothing else of substance.

Does anyone know more about this game?

Looks like one of the many unremarkable games of the late 90s and early 2000s that attempted to ride the Pokemon wave and failed. It seems the language barrier is also quite high. I'm still at least interested in seeing how the fights play out, if they truly are player-controlled and in real time.

I guess it's one of the very few DC games besides Seaman that supports the microphone, though.

Amazingly enough, Studio Wonder Effect is still in business. Predictably, they almost exclusively do mobage now, and they seem to have been involved with the hentai SLG series Demonion. Battle Beaster is still listed on their site.
