Yes. All of them. Every single one. No exceptions.

I like Doom/Quake and some other stuff.
I don't like realistic or modern military themed fps though.

Quake was the only one I enjoyed, back in the 90's. it was never a favourite genre, so never spent a huge amount of time with them. Wouldn't be able to sit through one now though, ultimately, for me they're extremely boring and tedious.

As a fan of arcade games in general. Stuff like Doom was and will always be awesome. The modern stuff is mostly crap, but that's to be expected really.
Re: Do shmup fans hate FPS's?
I've played a lot of FPS, while I most enjoyed the classic ones there's been some modern games that are good too like STALKER and Metro 2033.
Re: Do shmup fans hate FPS's?
I don't hate, but I don't play them either.
Don't invite me to play one though, or I'll get angry.

Re: Do shmup fans hate FPS's?
I used to like FPS.
I enjoyed the early stuff including console ports or exclusives, like DOOM, Powerslave, MOH 1&2, Half Life...
Then the genre went almost full linear with cut-scenes, then online-retarded, and I lost interest because those were no longer 'just' video games.

Re: Do shmup fans hate FPS's?
The original Deus Ex was splendid.
Every FPS I've played after however seems a brainless task intended to eat time; mask an inner depression and ESCAPE somewhat like a drug offers.
Sometimes they offer just the ticket to provide an easy cinematic experience and diversion that requires basically no game skill at all.
This can be nice if the game can be got for free and your time is not worth much either. Sort of like a psp emulator.
I would never spend good money on anything other than pcb(s) anymore, specifically shmups.

I used to think I hated FPS games, but then I realized I just hated brown "realistic" big budget military shooters. I love TF2, classic Doom/quake style games, and I'm fond of Halo to an extent.

Re: Do shmup fans hate FPS's?
I liked FPS up until they all started to look the same.
In the past I liked Doom, Duke 3D, Quake 1 & 2, Timesplitters and the first Halo.
Starting in the early 2000's every FPS (with a few exceptions) became military and brown.
The only modern FPS I enjoyed was Crysis and Crysis Warhead, those for some reason, really did it for me. I think it was the open-endedness where you could tackle missions the way you wanted to. Plus turning invisible and shooting people in the face from 4 miles away was satisfying. Great OST as well. I don't play many FPS's so I'm probably missing some good ones from the last decade.

Re: Do shmup fans hate FPS's?
I think STGs and (mainstream) FPS simply cater to a somewhat different and divergent gaming attitude. So while any one person might like one and not the other, some people may enjoy both to some extent. And as divergent as these attitudes can be, sometimes they seem to come together:mehguy wrote:I dunno, I get the feeling that many people here hate or don't play them.
- Halo is definitely an FPS but the SLASO (Single-player Legendary All Skulls On) enthusiasts must have some of that "STG attitude" to enjoy what they are doing. And they weren't happy when the series dropped scoring because it limited their play to "mere" survival.
- Vanquish is a single-player TPS but you have to approach it with an "STG attitude" to get the most out of it - probably explains why the mainstream never really warmed up to it.

Probably my favorite genre, personally. Definitely prefer early shit like the aforementioned stuff up until early 2000s. Modern stuff is primarily crap, and as mentioned, full of cut scene, QTE, etc. I miss the days of getting headaches and blowing away tons of baddies in a non-stop killing spree. Realllllly dig the STALKER series and Bethesda's take on Fallout, and even some of the Crytek stuff. Goddamn shame there isn't more stuff with RPG elements out there at this point. But the four hour campaign and molasses walk speed sells to the bro, so we're unfortunately kinda stuck with it.

I kind of do but not really...
played Team Fortress Classic competitively for 7 years and still boot it up to play some pickups/pubs from time-to-time. played a little bit of quake world team fortress before I made the switch to TFC.
still play quake live clan arena frequently.
also play hidden: source and wreck pretty hard at that game.
other than that... nothing really.

Re: Do shmup fans hate FPS's?
I loved the original crop of FPS games like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, etc but the genre is completely played out at this point. Counterstrike was the last game that I'd actually really put any time into, and it was awesome but ultimately I prefer the older, more atmospheric games like Doom and Quake to the "realistic" shit that they make now. The genre has completely stagnated since that point and now we have dozens of games released every year that are identical and boring.

Re: Do shmup fans hate FPS's?
I quite like FPS, although (like many in this thread) not particularly fond of the more modern stuff.
For single-player action, I don't think you can beat the original DOOM and the slew of mods it's generated. For deathmatch and 1v1 online, Quake 3/Live has been my favourite, although UT2004 is almost as good. And for teamplay, I don't think there's ever been a more satisfying experience than Tribes 2 Classic mod, playing CTF pubs 20v20 on one of the more expansive maps (I was a little too young at the time to get into competitive play while it still existed).
This is slightly off-topic, but did anyone else play and enjoy the PC Battlezone? The first real first-person RTS and to date the only one to get it right, I think. It's got this wonderful Cold War aesthetic and nothing feels quite so good as personally leading your squad into combat.

Re: Do shmup fans hate FPS's?
Hellgate had a good idea (absolutely lousy execution all around). One thing that's not intuitive is how inventory management in Diablo clones integrates perfectly with their combat system - they use the same interface. In an FPS, a Monster Hunter style system where you do inventory management primarily in town is probably far preferable.
... are there even more games in the same vein besides Destiny and Borderlands? It's a subgenre I've been interested since at least the cancelled/never put into production Seraphim..

Single player and local multiplayer: use a controller. Definitely. Remeber Goldeneye?
Online multiplayer FPS. Mouse + Keyboard.
Consoles are for single-player and local multiplayer games. Playing online on a console is silly. Use a PC. Can you not afford a PC? Your $300 laptop doesn't count. Thankfully playing online games period is pretty dumb. I know from experience. Give me back 2 years of my life FFXI. I would prefer not to have been victimized and cyber-stalked and constantly hacked, if I stayed offline this never would have happened.

Re: Do shmup fans hate FPS's?
That feeling when you kill 15 people in 2 seconds can never be matched by any earthly pleasure. I feel the anger of them all in a split second and I salivate.
Re: Do shmup fans hate FPS's?
There are a few FPS games I like, but most of them I don't care about. I've spent a fair bit of time on Borderlands 2 and Destiny, and have also occasionally gotten into arena shooters like TF2 and Hawken, but most FPS games I just ignore.
Re: Do shmup fans hate FPS's?
They make me dizzy, that's why I don't play them. I do have a beef with developers that cannot even conceive gameplay outside the FPS box *CoughBUNGIEcough*, or that force a franchise into it. (Don't get me wrong. I know it's impossible to make a Robocop RPG, but turning everything automatically into an FPS is starting to look lazy, IMHO.)
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.
