It was released during the PS1/Saturn era and has polygonal graphics, with a "realistic" but subtly stylized look.
It may have been ported to PS1.
It was likely made by either Konami or Namco, definitely a Japanese developer.
It begins with a fighting game-like character select screen (not team/roster select as in most soccer games), and the player you choose is the ONLY one you can ever control for the full duration of the match. It played very differently from Virtua Striker, Winning Eleven et al.
Any ideas?

Sounds like the Libero Grande series.

That's it, and I didn't know there was a console-only sequel. Thanks.

Re: Looking for name of an obscure arcade soccer game
Decided to give this a go [in MAME].
Almost dropped it immediately. It's not the sort of game that seems to lend itself to "immediate pick-up and play," it took several tries to figure out what the hell I was doing.
And then I finally scored a goal.
It's a pretty interesting concept, I'm just really surprised that it was a coin-op game. Takes a while to click, in which I'd suspect many a player to give it a pass after their first credit [and I suspect its home port did a fair bit better].
It's a pretty impressive game too, visually. Looks a bit like some of the Rage Racer team had worked on it, actually [some of the interface styling is really familiar, and the Rage Racer car brands are prominently shown as field-side ads]. The crowd looks a lot nicer than other PS1-era sports games too. And man, the game really gives you this amazing sense of you actually being on the field.
the FOV changes are the silliest thing though

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

I initially thought that Backbreaker was the American football equivalent of this, but it has you switching players mid-game.

The Ocarina of Time of footy games! I don't recall seeing an engine quite like it on PSX before (the camera this dynamic showing this much field). Well, I do, but not so rich in draw distance and detail.
Was the framerate any good? Looks also like the kind of game that gives some people "gaming sickness".
