Just watched Final Fantasy Advent Children :)

Post by ThirdStrike »

Just got done watching Final Fantasy Advent Children and must say this is a amazing QUALITY cgi movie. Why this is not being released in the theatre beats me. This surely is better then anything the theatre has seen this year excluding CRASH. The CGI and fight scenes are breathtaking and story is awesome and easy to follow. Also all your favorite Final Fantasy characters return. Fans of the series will also recognize the Musical score.Do not miss out on this technical achievement that more then makes up for the Spirits Within. I am going to watch this again and again. If this is what PS3 games are going to look like GO RESERVE A PS3 now!!!!!

An amazing movie that is both entertaining and awe inspiring.

If this discussion goes any further, just remember folks - generic discussion of the film is OK, but no asking for or direct assistance with copyright infringement please. (People know how to use search engines anyway if they really want...)

The movie certainly looks pretty and I will watch it when released but I for the life of me will never understand why FFVII is put on such a high freakin pedestal. Especially when compared to other games in the series (not including the drivel that was FF 9 and 10. )

B/c its actually the first FF series that went mainstream. I remember the hype/ad for that game when it first game out...it was literally everwhere in magazine and commercials. It has that eye-candy appeals which helps a lot. It maybe not a good of a game when compared to the old classic but its still a solid rpg that opens the door to newcomers that never played rpg before. I think its better then all of the series after it and better then part 5 japan.

I saw it at the Venice Fil Festival a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it.

Got to interview Tetsuya Nomura afterwards also.

I'm disappointed the Japanese DVD/UMD don't have either English dub or sub, but I guess it's because Columbia are doing their own localisation.

I watched it last night.

Visuals = 10
Story = 6

It was fun to watch, and I'll watch it again, but the story was no better than something you'd find in an RPG but compressed down to about 100 minutes. I thought it needed another 20 minutes for character development. The fansub translation is very good considering it was done in roughly 24 hours. I don't like the way he translated the slang though. And yeah, considering all the shit in theatres these days, this could've done pretty well theatrically.

SPOILER BELOW:

They needed a lot more footage/development of Yuffi, Barret, and the others.

I just hope they do release it on DVD and not only on UMD to p1mp the PSP. A follow up to one of the most remembered RPGs ever, w00t... on a 2 by 4 inch screen.

Eh, the story really didn't even need half of FFVII's party, really. It's pretty obvious they threw them in there so fans wouldn't get all pissy about it...but...That fight scene where the supporting cast shows up and fights the Bahamut looking thing is fucking badass.

Anyways, I loved it and Reno is just awesome.

Because it still has the second best plot in the series (well, I guess this depends on where you rank IV and VI, but it's definitely better than I, II, III and V, and VIII, IX and X are... well... yeah) and was a major step foward in presentation in games. Presentation means more than just "pretty cut scenes," to head off that remark. As for the gameplay, at the time we'd only gotten I, IV Easy and VI, and I'd argue that it plays better than any of those. Not better than V, but that wasn't made available here until much later, and the plot in that one was one of the worst in the series.

Basically, there have been better console RPGs, but not many more important ones.

And Mystic Quest. Please note though that our SNES FFII is not the same as FFIV Easy Type on the SFC. There's plenty of item, price, and other differences, as well as a different final, final boss sprite in Easy Type.

I personally don't count Mystic Quest as a part of the series since it wasn't originally a Final Fantasy game to begin with.

And while I'm far from being a fan of Final Fantasy VII, Advent Children still looks pretty cool and I'd like to see it.

Just finished watching this. While I like the CG, the battles are actionpacked, and the characters look so much better now (mmm... Tifa... ^_^;; ), the story got a little disjointed in the middle with all the flashbacks and sudden scene jumps. A good story though, going into what happens after the game.

I'll probably watch it again, because it's quite good, if not a little similar in theme to The Spirits Within.

(And has anyone noticed the similarities between Tifa and Aki?)

I watched this shortly after it was released. Good movie, and by far the most visually impressive CG I've ever seen. Amazing battle scenes. Was cool to see the characters of the game animated so well. Cid doesn't look like much of a wife beater in this though. :(

VII plays better than VI? No way!

Don't you hate how materia exchanging makes all the characters interchangeable (well, besides limit)?

Wait... You think V plays better than VII? Err... Okay, you like mastering a thousand of worthless jobs. I had more fun with FFT in that regard.

s the CGI & story line better than Final Fantasy Spirits within?
I’m not a FF fan, as I’ve never completed any of the series, but before I get flamed to the fiery pits of hell, my opinion is that FF-Spirits within, was one awesome film!

It had all the qualities I look forward in a film: Dramatic/sad JPN-style story line & moments, great actor interpretations, cool action & music... and the kick-Ass Zeus cannon like in Warriors of the Wind, Macross DYRL, etc...

So, does this new FF film share any similarities to this before I spend my hard earned money on it?

I still say that Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within would have been received much better by audiences had it simply been titled "The Spirits Within". If you remove Final Fantansy from the title, and just view it as a CGI sci-fi film, it's fairly competent. The problem was that many didn't want to see the film since it was "based on a videogame" and those who were serious Final Fantasy fans wanted little to do with it since it really bore more in common with Sega's Phantasy Star series than Square's Final Fantasy series.

The CGI in Advent Children is a slight step above The Spirits Within, although the character designs are far more manga/anime-esque in their design, the facial features especially. Given that, AC is nowhere near as realistic as TSW. The fight scenes are very over-the-top, but they're very well choreographed and are certainly the highlights of the film.

Bump, this was just released on DVD, wasn't it? Rented it from Netflix.

Awful. It's like an extended cheesily over-the-top action sequence with forced cameos ("the gang's all here!") and a plot that never should've been written. With horrible villains. Wasn't that main city a little out of place in the wake of the meteor? It's also a pain to see an unchanged retarded Cloud.

Do not buy this. Please.

Advent Children was like... a string of non-interactive Final Fantasy boss battles. It's fun to watch as long you don't pay attention to what little story there is.

I liked the piano version of the FFVII battle theme that played when Tifa fought whoever the fuck that guy was. I also liked the new version of "One-winged Angel." Did they change the lyrics? Or did they just swipe different ones from "Carmina Burana?"

Anyway, it was entertaining, it just wasn't a good film.

I never understood the appeal of action scenes like this. They're just... illogical, for lack of better description. They can pull whatever super jump or special move out of their ass and change the direction of the battle at any point. It's like I'm back watching Saturday morning cartoons or 2 Fast 2 Furious with anime characters. At least FF in-game battles are restricted by a set of skills and stats (anchored in some sort of internal logic). And none of the battles looked that retarded.

Heh, I had a fun time watching the movie exactly because of this. Especially the fight against Bahamut. I was looking forward to see what would happen next since it was pretty much unexpected all the time because of the unrealism.

In fact, the movie would work great as a drinking game. Sip everytime someone breaks the laws of physics. Players would need to change their blood by the end of it.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.
