good point, no Xbox 360 then

My pick, because people see scoring, 1cc'ing as an endless job that never pays off or is impossible to achieve. Basically, they see playing shmups outside credit feed, as a literal in the face interpretation of sisyphus's work.

I find a real payoff in shmups, not just from the accomplishments themselves but from the moment to moment excitement of the gameplay itself in each run. So I don't feel the Sisyphus allusion myself. I can definitely imagine non players seeing it that way, or seeing all challenging games that way. For some people, games are just a way to relax, not find excitement.

which is dumb because challenge and bettering yourself is such a fundamental part of gaming, well beyond and before video games. the people's desire to be lazy perpetuates the people's desire to be lazy

People play games, and participate in any medium for a variety of reasons. Some people want to relax, and some people want excitement. Some people want an interesting story, and some people just want pretty colors. Some people want a little of everything. There's nothing wrong with any of them. It's just subjective taste.

Was looking for an excuse to post this one. Not going to explain the analogy here. Hope it speaks for itself.

that is, people want shiny toys, not games; they need something that isn't games. they need to ask themselves if they're spending their time wisely or if they're not simply determined to waste it

there's nothing subjective about forcing everything to be a timewaster simply because people are allowed to be lazy and waste time

Despatche wrote: that is, people want shiny toys, not games; they need something that isn't games.
The difference between a "game" and a "toy" is a blurry one, considering that there's no all encompassing definition of games (or at least not one that anyone has ever agreed on). That being said, trying to call 99.999% of digital games anything but games is a massive stretch.

If these digital games that are somehow "toys", are satisfying and enjoyable to these people and provide something that they cannot get outside a digital game, than I don't see why they should abandon games in favor of toys, as you seem to be implying.
Despatche wrote: there's nothing subjective about forcing everything to be a timewaster simply because people are allowed to be lazy and waste time
Who's forcing anything to be a time waster? There are a variety of games out there catering to a variety of player experience goals. If a particular experience is not to your taste, no one is "forcing" it on you. Furthermore, "laziness" and attempting to find relaxation in what may be your only brief period of respite are not the same thing. Excitement, tension, and competition are things games do well, but they aren't the only things that games are good at providing in a unique way, and there's nothing wrong with preferring some of the many, many, many fortes of digital games over the more "classic" experience goals.

Marking others as "lazy" for not liking what you like demonstrates nothing but a lack of empathy in failing to accept that others might *GASP* want something else out of games than you or me. If they enjoy it and would do it again, than attempting to call it "time wasted" is simply false. And most of them that I've talked to do enjoy it, so to them it's not time wasted, which is all that matters. I have seen a few people who say that they think fighting games/shmups/etc. are interesting, but lack the time/confidence/will to play and excel at them, but these certainly aren't the full extent of players who do not enjoy them.

Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"
