Request: help me find some crap scary but funny movies
Request: help me find some crap scary but funny movies
I have a Chinese friend who really likes crap American movies about monsters. As she puts it, she likes movies that "are a little bit scary and a little bit funny" and wants me to find her some more.
Since I've avoided such stuff for years I've forgotten most of the nonsense I watched as a kid.
To make it more straightforward, she really loves Slither (which is admittedly kind of good) and I just watched Deep Rising on her recommendation (now in the movie thread).
She is really really into shark and sea monster stuff for some reason, and the only thing I can think of is Deep Blue Sea.
And when I say crap movies, anything goes - this girl thought Sharknado was scary. But in the event I have to watch any of these with her, if you can find something as watchable as either Sither or Deep Rising, I'd appreciate it. And remember, a little bit funny. Or something. I showed her The Thing and she didn't think it was scary enough. She likes those cheap scares where stuff pops out or limbs fall from the top of the screen onto people.
Sigh.
Thanks for the help.

Mama is pretty decent for what it is. Standard issue Angry Ghost Flick produced by Guillermo Del Toro. Genuinely uneasy mood and some creepy imagery, and also lots of cheesy jump scares. The only real failing is the monster CG which is too visible and thus a bit rubber chicken at points, so there's something funny covered!

Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Not sure if Bad Biology really qualifies but it's worth a watch anyway.

It must be torture for you having to sit through one of those movies eh? I hope she's not making you watch them with her.
I have this friend who's always inviting people over to watch movies at her place, but I stopped going when I realized horror movies were the only thing she wanted to watch. Bad horror movies. They do nothing for me.
Anyway, she'll probably enjoy the Evil Dead series.

If she's super duper especially deviant (like, really into completely, absurdly over the top nudity+gore), and likes the lowest of the low: Once again, you can't get any shittier than Troma.
Because they're indie, they gave away tons of their old flicks on the Youtubes. The documentaries are passable fare; the scene of the volunteers dry humping each other in a pile right next to Lloyd while he was trying to get a distribution deal with the creator of Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD explains so very very much.
Oh I've gotta add: Very often it seems like Troma flicks don't even seem to have scripts. Which puts them roughly on par with the likes of Prometheus, I guess.

Re: Request: help me find some crap scary but funny movies
The ultimate scary funny movie is RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD!
There is no equal... except perhaps Evil dead 2. But Return of the living dead is just the perfect movie your describing. Even the first 10 mins you'll be laughing your arse off whilst she's screaming.. Its the best thing ever.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Re: Request: help me find some crap scary but funny movies
Well, they're not "crap", but some funny/scary movies:
Evil Dead 2 (the first one is good, but is unintentionally funny...so maybe what you're looking for?)
Brain Dead/Dead Alive (get the uncensored one, if you can)
Re-Animator
Fright Night
Shaun of the Dead
Return of the Living Dead
Now, if you want some actual "crap" movies, I'd have to think that one over. There's way more bad ones, than good ones.

Robo Vampire is a supremely stupid movie, but it might be too far into the shit territory than most normies can take. Has some sweet fight scenes, though. It gets a plus for having Chinese vampires.

I second Pirahna 3d and Deadalive/Brain dead. Leviathan with Peter Weller is a good choice too.

Re: Request: help me find some crap scary but funny movies
Thanks all for having me wake up to so many suggestions.
I'll shortlist the ones I think she'll appreciate.
Drag Me To Hell - Good one! Plenty of cheap jumps and ridiculous stuff about curses, which Chinese ppl believe in. Should work.
Cabin Fever - Cringe gore spectacular. Should be screamworthy.
Leviathan - This looks perfect. Because it's in the sea, because it looks crap. And it has Peter Weller and Ernie Hudson in it. Unsure about that monster though. Maybe not scary enough. Might preview with trailer.
Deep Star Six - Fits the bill, but as above.
Evil Dead 2 - I wondered about the ED trilogy myself. I think the first will be too old/slow, but thinking about the raw awesome of the second one (plus monsters/humour) it's a go.
Piranha 3D - Yes, absolute perfection, but I am almost 100% sure she's seen this. If not, straight to the top of the list.
If you guys have got the picture from this and the exclusions below, please feel free to suggest more. It's difficult to outline the criteria but I'll try.
NOT -
Too shitty / shoestring budget
Too old / slow paced
Too niche / weird / difficult to make sense of
WANTS -
Stuff with sharks / monsters
Fairly new
Sea-based preferable
Like Deep Blue Sea / Deep Rising / Slither / Piranha / Anaconda / Tremors / Monsters hunting down and devouring small casts
Personally I'm thinking about The Blob from Creepshow 2 being a good candidate.
Ones I don't think I can use and why:
Monsturd - Just too terrible. She won't watch stuff like this or Thankskilling etc.
Mama - Too serious without the consolation of water. Remember she didn't think The Thing was scary or funny enough.
Army Of Darkness - Won't have the patience to follow it.
Braindead - Too much on the side of comedy. Wants monsters. And water.
Bad Taste - As above
Phantasm 2 - Really? I have only seen the first Phantasm, and I wouldn't recommend it for her. What does this one do differently?
Bad Biology - As compelling as a killer cock is, looked at the movie on YT and I don't think this is the Henenlotter to satisfy.
Troma - Too shitty
Brain Damage - I love this one, my favourite Henenlotter alongside Basket Case - but I don't think she'll appreciate it for some reason.
Evil Aliens - Too shitty
Evil Ed - As above
Accion Mutante >
El dia de la Bestia - Both of these interest me! But I don't think she'll appreciate and finding Chinese subtitles... could be impossible.
Return of the Living Dead - How have I not seen this? I'll be watching it, but again, I don't think the humour will be understood and *too old* or something.
Fright Night - She'll be much more receptive to the new one and I'm not watching that again. The old one is too awesome for her. She'll complain it's "boring and not scary".
Re-Animator - As above. Unfortunately.
Shaun of the Dead - She'll just never get the humour. Too funny. Not Hollywood crap enough for her.
Tremors - She loves them, but seen them all iirc. Was one of the first I suggested.
CHUD - Lol, I must watch. I'm in two minds about whether she'll appreciate it ("too old!") but I might suggest it after a screening.
Robo Vampire - Too shitty.
Gremlins - I really want, but I think she'll complain it's not scary and the Gremlins are just cute. She wants gore/monsters/cheap scares.
Slugs - Too old/shitty/slow etc (not my words).

Boa vs Python.
Probably falls into the too shitty category, but is great fun when watched with a group of friends.
A really good one (though not Hollywood crap) is Gwoe Mul/The Host. Really love that one.

Feast was pretty good. Has a good amount of humor, giant disgusting monsters, and lots of gore. I haven't seen the last two but I've heard they were both decent.

From Beyond is not super scary, a little bit silly, but in general actually a good movie. Awesome latex special effects. Plus S&M. Can't go wrong.
Lucio Fulci's The Beyond has some more scary gore bits, but it has a characteristically-awful Italian script. And dub.
I actually like Leviathan. Peter Weller is the man. The movie completely falls apart in the last fifteen minutes. It almost turns into pure farce, and left a super-sour taste in my mouth.
Oh, and Leprechaun, in all its permutations! Can't go wrong with that one for shitty fun horror movies.

I like how things that are too shitty are just "too shitty"; but the inverse of that, "too good" has to be explained in detail : D
