Best way to play SNES games (living in Europe)

Post by zeroX »

So, I want to buy a SNES console but I've gotten really confused about what's the best way to play.
Should I get an NTSC console or it won't play on my TV? (I'm getting a 21" Sony CRT with SCART input)
Which is the best SNES version?
Do PAL consoles have problems (slower in game speed, etc)?
I'm mostly interested in games that never got released in Europe, like Chrono Trigger.
Would I have trouble playing them here?

So, what would be the best possible SNES (modded or not) for me?

It doesn't really matter which console you get if you're playing on a CRT. You can get a PAL console and mod it for 60Hz and expand the slot for US cartridges or you can get a proper NTSC console. US consoles are ugly though and have a special power plug. If you want one of the NTSC mini consoles you'll have to mod it for RGB output first.

If you plan to get a Framemeister eventually you should try to find a 1CHIP console or mod a SNES mini as they have a sharper video output.

A good way is to get a Super Famicom (snes JP Version) and a Gamecube official RGB Cable. You will find JP games generally less expensive than US ones, at cost of language.

I've found this on ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Super-Nintend ... 4adc796b48

Is buying this the best choice?

I don't really care about the console's looks, I just want to play the games with the best video quality possible.
What do you mean about the NTSC special power plug? Would it cause problems?

I don't want a Framemeister either (I'll play old school games on the CRT).

@juji82
Well, since I want to play a lot of RPGs, no english is a deal breaker for me.
Does the S. Famicom have better RGB output than its other counterparts?

Do you know if there are any reliable SNES mini mod services in Europe?

The power plug on US consoles has a different shape. PAL and Japanese consoles use a standard plug that is easy to replace. The auction you linked doesn't come with a power adapter, so you'd have to import an original one (and use a step-down converter) or order one from otakus-store.net or a similar shop. Overall the auction is really expensive for a console without accessories. The RGB mod is very simple and you shouldn't have problems finding a modder in your country.

You could also import a SFC and buy both versions of the games and put the US version in the JP shell. JP games are usually dirt cheap. Or you could use a Super Everdrive for the games that don't use special chips.

There are at least two different types of PAL systems with different kinds of power plugs.

@Lawfer
I want to play US games and maybe some PAL ones [if there were any not released in America](Not sure though.)

I don't think there are many old school console modders in my country...
The retro community here is almost nonexistent.

Forget modding, you are in 2014 you can get anything you want, no need to waste money on modding a 50hz console or use adapters, this isnt the 90s anymore.

Get yourself a nice SNES Mini with an RGB Mod (either get an already modded one, or buy one from an ebay seller and send it to a modder) and enjoy all the US games you want with it.

I'm thinking that would be the best choice. Quite expensive though (plus shipping and maybe customs charges)!

Well it seems I spoke too quickly, I just found a greek forum dedicated on retro games, I might find a modder there.

I wonder if I can find a snes mini from ebay somewhere in europe and mod it here!

Well you can get a SNES with a SuperCIC installed , it will switch on the fly to 50/60hz and will bypass any region lockouts.
That's what I have , I've been running NTSC-U games on my pal snes for some years now... no need to import consoles from us/jp anymore , just the games (or get a flashcart) :mrgreen:
