JP Dreamcast VA0 power-supply universal voltage capable?

Post by kamiboy »

So, today it finally happened. The lethal mix of 110 and 220v hardware on hand addled me into plugging a JP Dreamcast into the 220v wall plug.

Thing is, contrary to expectations the DC did not bite the dust the instant I turned it on. In fact it powered on and was working fine until the 100uf/200v reservoir cap inside sent up a white flag in the shape of a hissing sound and plenty of smoke.

The DC continued to work fine as all this was happening and I had to manually turn it off.

So the reason the cap bit the dust is pretty clear, it is an old cap and was no longer capable of handling the extra 20% load over its specifications. But the thing is the DC was running fine. So this makes me think that the power supply inside my VA0 model is actually equipped to be universal voltage capable save than one cap.

I suspect that if I replace said cap with a 250-300v alternative it should be able to handle 220v currents fine. Can anyone with actual working knowledge of electronics and the DC shed any light on this?
