I'm in the process of doing some engine work.
It all started with me wanting to change intake manifolds. I had an Edelbrock Performer RPM (1500-6500). But I wanted a higher rev with better idle throttle response...So, I'm now using a Holley Street Dominator(Idle to 7200 RPM's)
Well, with the intake off, inspection of the valves on my 202 Camel Hump heads are kinda crappy! Kinda oily and sooty...not too good. Thats where my "blowby"/ slightly fouled plugs came from.
Ok, I got a newer set of heads for free,(early 90's) they're 194's, but they should have more power than the old worn out 202's.
Also, while in the process of all this, my friend suggested looking at the casting number on the block...just to be sure. All this time I thought the engine was the original 327, but its NOT. Its a 350 from the late 70's. Still, its a driver side dipstick. (meaning its still authentic to the era)
Anyway, when all the work is done, I'll have a 350 CI 350HP small block!!!
If I don't have any piston ring problems,(fingers crossed) I'll be getting a larger cam to slip in there. (260 right now, but I would much prefer something like a 290 on up to a 308 or so) which will boost power to at least 400-450HP, which is my goal for the Chevelle.
My Chevelle's Engine...

How much would that cam run you? I sometimes envy you for not having a computer controlled car. Other times I'm glad I do.
My latest car-issue is my god damned clutch again. Completely flushed the clutchline of all old fluid (which was black after a month, WTF?). Then bled it with a vacuum to get every last damned air bubble out.
Got in and gave it a test run. Cool! The clutch is easier to press and it shifts alot nicer. Maybe if I don't red line it the clutch fluid won't turn black (though it was burning it due to the distance between the headers and the clutch-line; which has hopefully been alleviated by moving it behind a heat shield and wrapping some thick hose around it).
I took a turn at 30mph and put it into 3rd instead of 2nd and pushed on the gas. THUB THUB THUB THUB vroooom. WTF was that?
Drop back to 30 and put it in third and hit it. THUB THUB THUB THUB vroooom. Fucking thing is slipping something fierce. 4th 5th 6th, same thing.
Fuck this clutch. Fuck this slave. Fuck this t.o. bearing. Fuck this pilot bearing. Fuck the whole thing.
Ordered new parts today, a Z06 clutch instead of the POS Spec Stage III.
Hope to have them later this week or early next.

Sorry to hear about your clutch problems, I have a friend who might know what to do, and may be able to offer some advice...I'll ask him about it.
A cam from Crane Cams with lifters is around $112.00 from JEGS!!! Not really much more than $150.00 with other brands with similar RPM ranges.
The cost would be more if I went with a "roller" cam. I can't afford that, but its really not something I truely "need".
I have a bigger carb now...so much for "Low Carb Diets"!!!
Its a Holley 750 Vacuum secondary. The previous carb was a Holley 600 Double Pumper...which was a little too small. Then again, I find out the engine is a 350 and I have done some mods...it all makes sense now.
Usually 750's work really well with 350's...especially when "modded".
So, here we go.
If you guys remember I was going to get a 350 to replace the 327, but I no longer need to do so, because I've had a 350 all along!(lazy me for not checking sooner) Thats pretty cool! I'm sure(hoping) the rings are still in good shape. I should be able to tell tomorrow. I believe it was the heads that were bad. Still, it ran good, but it will run MUCH better now!!!!
BTW: My new heads are 76cc chambers...meaning they should flow pretty well! The Camel Humps I'm replacing are 64cc. I should at least gain 30HP, which in turn should generate the said 350HP...that is until I install a bigger bumpstick (cam).
I'll be trying to do some trades real soon. Maybe I'll even pick up a Timing "Gear Drive"...can you hear the whine yet?
The torque converter I have is a 2500RPM stall, so I'll try to get the biggest cam that I can use with that. Still, I see more HP in the very near future!!!
Should all be good for an honest 400HP!!!
There is a dyno only an hours drive from me...maybe I'll be cruising over there one day soon..just to see, "What She's Got".
BTW: The paint and body will be done soon. Its gonna be Pearl White with Black Metalic "SS" stripes. Basically the same shit, just with better quality paint, and more sparkle.
Shit, I'm even going to cut a hole in the hood for my Velocity Stack, it should fit really nice under the 3" Cowl hood scoop.
Man, really...gonna detail the engine again too. Its going to be white. YES, white, with black pully's and such. I'm even going to paint my alternator white with black stripes to match the car!!!
All the new chrome should look pretty spiffy on that!
Last BTW:
That fucking asshole who rear-ended me has left town!!!(Exiled!?) I'm doing all this by myself and with the help of some really good friends.
Thanks Aces!!!

Sorry to hear that douche skipped town. I figured something like that was gonna happen though; typical asshole.
None the less, it sounds like you are going to have a blast working on your engine. I'd love to put a better cam in mine, but I think the next thing I may do is some 3.73's. Need more low end torque.
I'm hoping my parts get here by friday as I plan on dropping everything friday, going to a wedding on saturday, and hopefully putting it back up sunday - though I don't know if my buddy is gonna be around to help me put it back up.
With your engine, are you able to pull it out through the top? I'm still not sure exactly how to get at mine. Only way I've heard of is to unbolt everything and actually pull the car up off the engine and lower it because the engine is located slightly behind the windshield. Not sure how to get the hoist bolted on back there.

Nah, older cars, you remove the engine from above...so its ALOT easier!!
Upon pulling the heads, I've discovered they are not 202 valves, but instead regular 194's.
They are 327's that were made from 1966 to 1967. So, they're still worth something for someone looking for old parts for restorations etc.
Anyway, I traded em already.
I traded the 327 Camel Humps with an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake for an MSD 6AL ignition box with a high output coil...all complete with the necessary wiring. I then gave that away to my friend who is helping me with all this.
PLus, I just got a very good set of headers from him,(since mine are old and need to be cut) plus some extra parts I'll be needing, so it will all work out in the end.
Now I just need $112.00 for a new Crane Energizer Cam. I'm thinking about going with a 282 or a 292. It will sound "lumpity", but not as radical as a top fuel funny car.
Even with just the 260 thats in there now, it sounds "rough". (or mildly racy if you prefer) Enough to vibrate the house when its in the garage, and make pictures rattle on the walls!
Did I mention I just got a chrome alternator mounting bracket? Oh well, just did now.
I can't wait to get er all buttoned up and going again. This time, ole Chevelle will be better. Or in dorky video game terms, Chevelle DX.

Actually, it would be kinda hard to refer to me as a "dork". I don't look or act like a dork...I don't smell like a dork, so therefore, I must not be a dork.BulletMagnet wrote:Bah! What kind of dork are you?TWITCHDOCTOR wrote:This time, ole Chevelle will be better. Or in dorky video game terms, Chevelle DX.
Super Mega Hyper X-Chevelle Reload Championship Limited Special Edition Remix Turbo!
The only thing that I do that could be considered "dorky" would be to play video games and post on this website! (video games are cool though!)
Hell, I don't even wear a helmet when I ride my bicycle...shit.
I'm not a real good speller, and I don't know shit about computers. I do know how to use the internet though.

This should prove it all right here...guess what? I've never ever been in a "Chess Club". Honest! I do have enough smarts to know how to play though, so watch it! I can even scratch my head and rub my belly at the same time, but I ain't no "brainiac". In fact, I think I got an "A" once or twice...but that was in shop.
Some people wear wrist watches, carry cell phones, laptops...these are all "High Tech"...I carry a Bic Lighter, go figure.

sounds like somebodys in denial
