So says the promo text:
As a big tabletop fan, I've often pondered how the frantic, reaction-based world of shmups might translate in a meaningful, reasonable way into a board game (something like a reskinned D-Day Dice, perhaps; that has scrolling of sorts, shooting, dodging enemy fire and milking scoring mechanics to an extent, even if it's rather abstracted from twitch play).THE BATTLE AT KEMBLE’S CASCADE is the board game adaptation of retro shoot ‘em up video games.
In the game, you are one of many brave space pilots, sweeping around the asteroid fields in nimble yet powerful fighters. Your objective? Glory, fame, and Bellonium!
The game is played out on a scrolling space backdrop that continously reveals new threats like asteroids, space mines, and enemy fighters and cruisers. Zigzag through this deadly star field, fire at anything that moves, upgrade your ship, and you should come out of it with just a scratch. Unless, of course, you crash right into the final boss…
The Battle at Kemble’s Cascade is an arcade classic waiting to be discovered!
So, bordering on off topic, but it's specifically arcade shmups reworked as a board game, so has my interest. Could be good, could be bad (I'll get a copy on release and feedback here) but I look forward to it. One for the shmupping tabletoppists like myself.
Zman (the publisher) do good quality product with fairly high production values, so could be reason to be optimistic.
Low info official webpage here.
EDIT: In before the Euroshmup/Eurogame gags (if anybody cares about both gaming types enough to care). What I really mean by that is please make such jokes. Something about a cardboard health-bar would suffice.
EDIT 2: More info on the game's more detailed Board Game Geek entry. Loads here. And a wealth of images that suggest a grid of tiles that maybe represents the play field of a shmup.
