Whisky
Whisky
I bought my first bottle a few years ago. It was a Highland Park 12. Now I have a dram of Whisky (Scotch or others) pretty much every week.
It's become my go-to drink; I've ditched beer and wine. An expensive "hobby", this, with everything literally going down the drain.
I used to have a dozen of bottles opened, but since last spring I only keep a couple. I go to tastings when there are some locally. Scotch is prohibitively expensive here - you can pay twice what people in the States pay for their booze. For example, a bottle of Ardbeg Corryvreckan costs 70$ in the US, 170$ here. An aberration.
That's a public Monopoly for you!
Is anybody else into this?

Re: Whisky
If I'm at home and I'm going to have a drink, it's almost always whiskey for me. I usually rotate between Glenfiddich, Bowmore, Bushmills, Highland Park, Glenlivet and occasionally Jameson but every once in awhile I'll venture out and buy something different (in fact, I'm currently enjoying a bottle of Tobermory).
Re: Whisky
I did have a few glasses of Tobermory before. It didn't really stuck with me. I admit I'm more into peaty whiskies these days... I've been enjoying Caol Ila quite a lot. Reminds me somehow of Lagavulin, but is lighter (and cheaper!).

Re: Whisky
I like it, prefer bourbon to scotch although I'm not enough of a career drinker to care. It may seem sacrilege but i'm pretty content with a bottle o' Jack.
I find I can drink a lot more without getting a hangover too, as opposed to beer which makes me feel like shit even when i'm still drinking.
Oddly enough my family seem to approve as my late grandfather apparently got through a bottle some nights... >_<

Re: Whisky
I quit drinking a while ago and I'm sexier than ever and I can spend that money on unnecessary things like expensive clothes and electronic devices.
I did enjoy getting wasted every other day and yelling at my friends though. If you're going to drink do it with style, drink nice stuff and enjoy the burn. Whiskey is a good choice.
I found different types of liquor to give me a different feeling drunk and it influenced my behavior. Beer made me tired and sluggish unless I was with a large group of people and actively walking around. Cider was similar to beer but didn't make me nearly as tired. Wine was a sort of sickly slurring feeling drunk, but was nice since 1 bottle of wine to myself resulted in the perfect level of inebriation; not quite enough to vomit but walking was fun and challenging. Jack Daniels hyped me up and made me aggressive and angry, yet I enjoyed acting like a jackass but regretted calling my friends fags the next day.
I'm glad that phase of my life is over I don't even enjoy having a drink one bit now, I'm a nicer person and feel much healthier. Instead of a headache in the morning I can look at all of the cool stuff I have instead.

I have been laying off of it, but am staying with some friends and they had a bottle of Glenlevit 18. I only had the 12 before which isn't my favorite but isn't bad. 18 is pretty good... they don't have a lot left considering I'm the only one that drank any. :-/

Re: Whisky
If I'm drinking whiskey, 9 times out of 10 it's Jameson's. I honestly don't really like scotch, and for some reason, especially not the expensive ones, which is good I guess. I find the smokier whiskeys are meant for sipping and appreciating, which is the exact opposite of the way I generally drink.
I chug and appreciate the intoxication

Re: Whisky
I've taken a liking to Bourbon as well in the last 2 years. I have had 2 bottles open for a long while (Woodford Reserve and Elijah Craig) and people tend to naturally go to Scotch over Bourbon when I offer.
Obviously very different, I admit I like the sweetness of Bourbon from time to time. Plus it costs half the price of a decent single malt, which counts for something.

Re: Whisky
I mostly explore the budget options. I'm anxious of spending more than I do on food on drink in a week. At least not in one bottle.
Still occasionally some out of reach scotch gets a discount and I'm tempted to loosen my purse strings for the occasion - can anybody give me a rough guide of what's worth looking out for?

Re: Whisky
Big bourbon drinker here too. Four Roses Small Batch has recently become my new favorite, but I always keep bottles of Bulleit and Maker's on hand as staples.

I only really drink rums now, occasionally, when I feel like it.

Re: Whisky
Whiskey is great but it causes me to talk MEAN shit to people, so I don't drink it that often. I only use it for medicinal purposes and I find Jack Daniels and Maker's Mark to be suitable; thanks for the suggestions, though.

I bought some whisky once. Had nightmares every night I drank it.
I liked it well enough, though.

Re: Whisky
I don't really drink too often, but will opt for some Johnnie Walker Black Label once in awhile.
Kinect? KIN NOT.
Re: Whisky
Question - does Southern Comfort count as a whisky? It tastes a bit like one.

Nah, it's a liqueur, but it's blended with some bourbon, hence the flavor.
@Thread
Not really that much into whiskey, but I can tell the good ones, mainly from my experience tasting wines. Best whiskey I've had was the 18 year Suntory Yamazaki. The fragrance was beautiful. Enjoyed that bottle till the very last drop.

Re: Whisky
As per the other (superior) whiskey thread, the best deal I ever got was a glass of Yamazaki 18 at a bar in San Francisco. Nobody ever asked for it. It was 15 for a serving, and the guy poured me what can only be described as "at least a triple". :-/
It's a fine whiskey, but if you want something peaty you'll find it's not for you. If I'm going to spend that much ($100 - $120 retail), Yoichi 15 is better for me.

....But, that is the absolute worst swill I have ever had the displeasure of drinking, and responsible for the most apocalyptic hangover I've ever had. I feel a bit ill at the moment even recalling that night. The price:quantity ratio should have tipped me off, but alas - I was young, foolish, and didn't have much money to spend. That shit comes in a plastic 4L jug and costs about Y2000 - only for the seriously grizzled alcoholics that have had the taste buds burned out of their mouths through years of abuse. I remember it being akin to drinking high-grade lighter fluid. Their motto should be "crack the seal, wake up in jail."
I'll go back to Old Crow before I ever touch that bottled nightmare again.

Re: Whisky
Anyone else fallen in love with Lagavulin? Still the best whisky I know. Always have one spare bottle for these suddenly appearing special occasions.
Re: Whisky
Lagavulin is awesome and definitely one of my favorites.
Have tried too few of their different vintages (only 12 and 16) to really name them as an absolute favorite though.
Go-to whiskies are Ardbeg Uigeadail and Talisker 10.
Favorite one is a Talisker 20 year old 1982 Bourbon barrel aged. Ridiculously good stuff. Definitely the most violent whisky i've ever drunk.

I only know Lagavulin because of Parks and Rec tbh - I dunno much about whiskey in general but of Irish stuff Green Spot and Yellow Spot are supposed to be very good I hear.
