How does sync work on my rgb monitors?
Hey I'm just trying to understand how sync works. I have a couple different Sony pvms i picked up & one has a long vga looking connection that says sync on green & the others have a BNC spot that says sync in & sync out. I'm kinda confused in general what sync is & how to use it between the two types. It may be useful to tell you I'm wanting VGA to bnc. & that's where my confusion really begins... Do I need a cable with one sync BNC or two sync BNC for vertical & horizontal or is one always in green ugh? & then the whole long VGA looking sync is a whole nother headache.. am I gonna need two different adaptors one for each different style tv...plz help I'm obviously lost on how to sync & what cord/adaptor to get. Also I understand I'll need arcadevga card & or 15khz soft mod..
My pvms:
Pvm-2530
Pvm-1344q
Pvm-1943md
Do I need SVGA Male to 5 BNC Male RGBHV Cable which has two sync or just a rgbs cable with 1 sync?

Those monitors cannot display 31khz VGA signals.
For 240p/480i you need a sync combiner that combines H and V sync into a single C-sync that you then feed into the sync input BNC.
Describe what your source is.

Re: How does sync work on my rgb monitors?
To answer your question in a general sense, sync is used to synchronize the video input on a monitor. In RGBS, Sync (S) is typically either Composite-Sync or Clean Sync. Composite sync is basically composite video which you can see an example of its signal on Fig 1. Clean sync is composite video without the "video data", you're left with a "clean" sync signal. A sync cleaner such as sync strike will convert a composite sync to clean sync

Fig 1 "Composite signal"
So RGBS is similar to composite video, but red, green, blue, and sync are on 4 separate signal lines. Sync on Green (RGsB) is similar to RGBS, but the sync signal is outputted along with the green signal on one video line, thus you only need 3 signal lines. VGA is RGBHV, where you have a horizontal and vertical sync signals to finely improve the synchronization of the RGB signal, thus you can get hi-res video signals (such as 31khz and beyond).

Small correction on beatsgo's post. Composite sync is actually the same as "clean sync". There is a difference between composite video (video + sync) and composite sync (only sync).

Re: How does sync work on my rgb monitors?
the retrocables.co.uk site suggests you need 1 sync cable when using SCART to BNC for a PVM...

I have the exact same query myself, I cant test my kit out till after this Wednesday when the monitors and cables are delivered...(I will buy the 29.99 one from the site above and see what happens :])

Re: How does sync work on my rgb monitors?
Well...
I have been told on a separate post that you need to buy a 5BNC with 2 sync and then use a T connector to turn it into one. This gets plugged in to the EXT SYC connection on a PVM.
An update on the other cable I suggested...its the wrong one...the one you need to connect a scart console to the PVM is...
http://www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/male ... cable.html
but it needs to be the INPUT VERSION...you specifiy this before purchasing...
I emailed them and asked which would I need and its the one in the link....
Will be trying all this out come Wednesday, once my PVM's finally arrive...

So since I'm gonna be hooking a computer to mine I'd need VGA to 5 BNC with T connector & Arcadevga graphics card & I should be set I believe ????

This is the answer I received, probably the same thing you are asking, although your thread started getting technical :]

Re: How does sync work on my rgb monitors?
Well my setup is up and running...PVM 20M2 tested along with a PVM20L4 and M4 and all worked beautifully. the L4's had a bit of a red tinge to them, but I need to figure out (possibly factory reset) the settings to adjust them...
