Oh man, it's so hard not to wonder whether there is a double standard over this. Certainly I am sure that if the college exercises oversight these kids won't be in worse shape than the average debate or mock trial squad...

Sorta related but not really, my community college has a class on Lord of the Rings and Middle Earth in general. I'm not sure if that's awesome or just wtf.

If a class on the Lord of the Rings books was offered as an elective I might actually consider something like that. Now if someone tried to make a whole degree program out of it...
Re: College offers scholarship for League of Legends players
Well, I've heard about popular studies programs. (Nearby I've got, though I've tried not to read it, an actually fairly scholarly book on anime, with The Major on the front of course.) Given how widespread Tolkien's conception of orcs, elves, dwarves, rings, giant spiders and eagles, and '50s technology in fantasy terms has become, it's actually a fairly important source for modern culture.Vexorg wrote:Now if someone tried to make a whole degree program out of it...

jokes aside, I'd consider taking an elective on it too. never read any of the books before, so it'd be an interesting excuse to dive in. I'd prefer Game of Thrones, tho.

I've learned over the years that it's best not to take a college class on a piece of work you love, because there's a good chance you might end up detesting it.Lord Satori wrote:Sorta related but not really, my community college has a class on Lord of the Rings and Middle Earth in general. Wrote a Master thesis on a book I used to like - now I can't stand the fucking thing. People had warned me about this, and it sure happened.

It's just a show to cover for Ogre - with a nickname like that, of course he's a secret Tolkien reader. Or maybe he just doesn't like orcs, which are basically stunted ogres.Joe T. wrote:The Alpha Betas are gonna come toss these NERDS out of their dorm.
