With the recent discussion of the Evil Within and the survival horror genre, I thought we could have a general discussion thread?
- What survival horror games are your favourite? Where did you start with the genre (sub genre?)?
- Played andy current/last ten survival horror games? Thoughts on them?
Briefly, my favourite survival horror game has to be Silent Hill 2. Was really an experience I wasn't expecting, that game gave me nightmares, but I kept coming back for more. I still have a hard time calling games like Resident evil 4 or anything survival horror. Yes, good game, but its more like an action game to me? Some would disagree Im sure.
On the PS3 I actually imported Siren: Blood Curse. Mainly so I could have it and play it before the NA PSN release, but also so I could have the physical copy. Awesome game. Went back to the atmospheric, no weapons, scary survival way. I don't really like the whole "blow everything away with weapons" way. Whats so survival based about that? With that said I did enjoy the original dead space, but for the jump scares, not the atmospheric spooky-ness.
Anyways, what are everyones opinions?

Re: The Survival Horror Thread
Individually Silent Hill 2 is the best game i've ever played. Silent Hill 1 is the scariest.
Fatal Frame is the most consistently excellent series. I also love Corpse Party and Sweet Home because I'm a weirdo.

Re: The Survival Horror Thread
I'm a huge fan of KCET's four Silent Hill games. The first two are the superior productions and landmark horror titles, but the third and fourth have a lot of good material in the same surreal vein. I love replaying them in release order every couple of winters, when the evenings are nice and long and I can take my time basking in the atmosphere and details. Cautiously optimistic about the upcoming game. I don't consider the outsourced games part of the series - I don't actively detest them or anything either, I just don't think any are in the same league (Shattered Memories and Downpour are distinctly the better of the four).
Very fond of REmake - the human and monster models still look insanely good, and atmosphere is so palpably moldy, damp and decrepit, love it! SH2 and some parts of SH4 excel at this kind of musty air too... I think I like it so much partially because I absolutely can't stand that sort of environment in reality. I actually got to play both REmake and SH2 for the first time while caretaking a hurricane-wrecked house missing much of its roof, was a hell of a backdrop (admittedly it'd been bleached and scrubbed the fuck out, prior). Those were some of the fondest times of my gaming life, actually.
RE2 is good stuff too, the ultimate playable zombie b-flick.

I've still not played any of the Fatal Frames, to my regret. I do actually own all currently released titles though, haha - planning to get V when it arrives too. I'll get around to 'em someday. See also the Siren trilogy.
Survival horroring is kind of my break from the more technically demanding arcade staples I spend 90% of my gaming time on. So I rate much more on atmosphere, narrative and overall production than in those types of games. ACSeraph elaborated on the distinction perfectly in recent posts. I won't care at all if the new SH plays as simplistically as the first two, as long as it's a similarly well-executed surreal horror trip.

I rate RE4 as first-class, but it's not really a horror game in my book either. A highly atmospheric action/adventure game with lots of creepy, nasty and knowingly OTT fun, sure. It's a moot point with the game itself being such a fine experience, and then there's one of the most addictive minigames ever in FUCKIN MERCENARIES too.Ed Oscuro wrote:RIDIN SPINNAZ

The fatal frame games on the PS2 are awesome, never played the one on the Wii.
I will say in resident evil 4's defence though I loved the demo. It was the best thing that came out in the GameCube that whole year, a demo.
The whole creeping trough the forest into the town, trying to survive with basically nothing. That crazy fucking chainsaw guy trying to behead you. Then the entire game came out and was way over the top for me as far as survival horror goes.
